In today's scripture we span the years of life here on earth. This lesson is one of those that, with only an approach of "skimming the surface," you will miss the meat of God's word. Verse 7 culminates with a phrase that will be recognized by those who have attended funerals. In a funeral you may hear "… ashes to ashes, dust to dust …" (refer to Genesis 3:19). This verse "brings it home" to point out to us that the previous verses refer to a lifetime spent here on earth. A lifetime begun with a knowledge of "thy creator" (Ecc 12:1) and used as an example for others to see.

ENJOY YOUR YOUTH
Ecclesiastes 11:9,10Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.
These two verses greatly reflect the title of this section. Of course, the burning question is - how do you define "joy?" Can you have joy and maintain a Christian life and witness? Of course. Verse 9 advises that you walk in the ways of your heart. You can make a decision to follow God and live a life for Him, even in your youth. You also have the free will to say "maybe later" and put off your decision. Verse 9 has that one covered also, because "for all of these things God will bring thee into judgment."
