Matthew 5 Bible Study - Love My Enemies

I originally wrote this for the Free Will Baptust Press High School SS Lesson. It has expired in its use and has been distributed with their permission.

A LOOK INSIDE

There happens to be quite a bit of wisdom in this short collection of verses. We have seen in previous verses that one of the traits that sets us apart from the world is the ability to love our enemies. This is a hard sermon to live, but many people have enough faith to do just that. We will look at real world examples of God's children who are able to love and forgive people who are deemed unworthy of forgiveness by the rest of the world.

BREAK IT DOWN

PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMIES

Matthew 5:43,44 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Verse 43 clearly gives us the world view which has persisted from the time that the scriptures were written until now. Those in the world today seem to discount the words of Paul from Romans 12:19 - "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." That verse is followed up with a commandment to give your enemy food and water if he is in need. By doing this you will "heap coals of fire upon his head."
