What are Toxic Relationships and Why Should We Avoid Them?

Toxic relationships are relationships that constantly deplete your energy and leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained. These relationships involve what I call needy, greedy and seedy people. I feel that I'm an expert on this topic, as I've let so many of these types of people slip into my life and,on the flipside, I've been a toxic partner- a greedy and manipulative one.

Toxic partners are partners who can be controlling, dramatic, mistrustful, self-centered, abusive, condescending or host a number of other harmful qualities.

So, what should we do if we find ourselves in a relationship with a toxic person? First of all, I think we should pray for them to become followers of Jesus and turn away from sin and darkness. If they choose not to do so, we shouldn't continue to allow them to suck the life out of us.

The Bible provides some good advice about toxic relationships and I think we are wise to follow it:

1 Corinthians 15:33 ...Bad company corrupts good character.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Stay away from people who are not followers of the Lord! Can someone who is good get along with someone who is evil? Are light and darkness the same?

I think if you are in a toxic relationship you run a high risk of being corrupted and becoming a toxic partner yourself. Get out! The Lord has better plans for your life:

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
