Your have an identity in Christ; what is it and how do you walk in it? Many in the church today suffer in this area, they do not know who they are in the Lord nor do they understand what role they play in the Body; nor do they grasp that the gifts of the spirit are for them. So we will take a quick look at this today!
Before we jump into the role you are called to fulfill – it is so imperative to understand this first point – You are loved by God; He desires your love and devotion any day over your sacrifice. We must get this in our spirit; His love should be the foundation in which we stand on for everything else to align within His will and purpose for us.
The Lord is more concerned with the attribute of Love then any gifting or calling He has for you. He is the God of Love – Sent His son for you – that you may have a relationship established in Love – that you may show this world His love. If you do not feel this connected with the Lord and His love – we need to focus on that before we can move forward and walk in your calling. Why so? We can never function truly to the fullness of what the Lord has for us – without understanding and being in Love with the Lord.
Ok now that this out of the way…we can get to – what is an identity and how do we walk in it?
1. Sameness of essential or generic character in different instances.
2. The distinguishing character or personality of an individual.
What an amazing definition – sameness – We are called to be imitators of Christ – Whatever your calling is – it must align and look like the character of Christ, period! You may be called to be a teacher, but teach through the personality Christ gave you. Do not try to imitate another teacher – We should be mentored in our calling, but the outcome should be your own identity. There are many great men and women in the faith, but you are called to leave your own mark – are you willing to walk it out?
You were created to be you – and you alone. You have a distinguishing character and that sets you apart to be your own individual. We should learn from others, but take that and present it in your personality. We have a personality that will reach certain people groups – and this is why ministry needs to be a team effort – for we all bring something different to the meeting!
Many times your identity lies within the dreams or desires you have in your heart that are towards the Kingdom of God. God begins to reveal your identity within your heart and spirit and He uses the body to confirm such calling, mandate –identity… to help bring it about for what God has intended to be.
12 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
We must have a sober estimate of who we are in Christ – but we must come to the point of saying this is who I am in Christ. We must not fear, bulk or neglect who we are called to be. Let’s say you feel called to be a teacher, but there is already one operating in your church– does that mean you missed it and you were just dreaming? NO, remember – you have your own personality – one that is not theirs – one that is called to be unique in character!
Take a stance and pray about this desire, seek out wisdom – speak with trusted friends and leadership – and talk with others that may have the same calling – but remember, different personality!
4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
There are many members in ONE body. Think about all the people that attend your church…each one of them, that is serving Jesus, fit into this passage. Now take a look around the same group and see if they are walking in their identity – calling – or purpose…or are they sitting and waiting for God to show up – or believe that the church functions on the shoulders of the Pastor? (We love Pastors – They have much to offer, but we realize that God did not set it up for one man to carry the burden of the church and to meet the needs of the community, alone) Yes, that is a lot to take in, but we must get to a point where we realize the power of this passage – Yes, YOU have apart to play!
