11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
My goal is to make this simple and to the point – to bring simple truth and clarity to this gift…
What gifts did Christ give to the body; to build, strengthen and equip the saints? This gift comes in the form of mankind. The purpose is to use men and women within the calling and purpose that was predestined before they were born. This gift unfolds in men/women as they walk in such a calling as an Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor or Teacher.
We need to understand that there is a difference between having some understanding of these gifts vs one actually being called into this ministry to equip the church.Knowledge does not supersede calling. It is not the role of the Church to put this mantle on anyone but the church is called to recognize such ministry and support it.
Many churches or denominations do not recognize the role of Apostles or Prophets. Can we say that we have to a point of unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son?Eps. 4:13 states that these gifts are needed till that time comes…Think about just unity – look around and count how many different Churches / denominations are within your community, then outside of that area, now your state – how about within the USA – wait…how about in the world?
This is not to knock denominations, but in the New Testament there were no denominations – but the Apostles, Prophets and disciples preached one Gospel, one message for one purpose – to lift up Jesus!
What was and is the role of Apostles and Prophets –
20 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
Their role yesterday and today has not changed.Apostles and Prophets – those that have the mandate, calling and purpose for the Lord are vital in the church today. Many churches do not prosper in the Spirit because man has put all the pressure on the shoulders of a Pastor – they were not created to carry such a load – nor can they truly bring a church to its complete identity without the other 4 gifts standing in unity next to them.
The bible is clear – the foundation of the New Testament church (which is the model for church life and growth for today) was built and should be established with Apostles and Prophets as Jesus is the Key cornerstone!
Why are we afraid of the name or role of Apostles and Prophets in the Church today?
In Part 2 we will begin to break down the role of Apostles and Prophets. We want to take our time and make this simple and easy to understand!
I hope that you will be open and blessed as you read this series…My the Lord abound in your heart, mind and spirit as we study these gifts!
