And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
"...make disciples of all nations..."
We(the church) do a great job at "getting them saved" but for many, that's all they know and that's all they experience; never progressing to becoming a "disciple of Christ".
Looking at chapter 4, Jesus saw Simon(Peter) and his brother Andrew and simply told them to "Follow Me". And after them, He called James and John, and the Bible says, "immediately they left the boat of their father, and followed Him."
Moving forward to chapter 19:16-30, the young man with great (earthly) possessions, kept God's commandments but still wondered what he lacked. And what it was, was this young mans unwillingness to "Follow Jesus"; "If you want to be perfect, go sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Jesus was about "making disciples". Yeah, the young man was keeping the Law, which was a good thing, but he did not or was unwilling to be a follower of Christ. Jesus Himself said, "If anyone desires to come after Me(be where I am), let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me." [Matthew 16:24]
Being "saved" is just the beginning. If not we would all get saved a God would call us home. Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, and yeah you will be saved, but staying on that right path requires the "following of Jesus". The problem is too many of us stop at our confession. Never really "deny ourselves", never "take up his cross" which ultimately stops us from truly "following after Christ" which is the goal. He Himself tells us to preach "repentance and remission of sins"[Luke 24:47], that's how they(the nations) are going to get saved.
God's desire is that "all men be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" [1 Tim. 2:4] and my understanding(my belief) of that 'coming to the knowledge of the truth' takes place through discipleship.
I believe that there are many people who are and have gotten "saved", but in order to be put in the category of "Christian": Christ-like Ones, you must first be a disciple or "follower of Christ". Learning His teachings and "observing all the things which He commanded".
No matter the denomination, all has been called to be a "follower of Christ". By doing so, this would have us going in the same direction, being led by the same spirit. Jesus prayed that we, the believers would be "one"[John 17:20-26].This can only take place if we are "following" Him.
We have all been called to be a disciple and all been sent to go and make disciples.
***...and in all you do, abide in His word, have love for one another and bear much fruit that you may be His disciple.
Let us all move from being saved to being disciples.
