What we know about the Father comes from You and, ostensibly, from the Jewish writers of the Old Testament. We know You, Jesus, from the gospels and other New Testament writings. But there is very little written about the Holy Spirit in scripture. There is a good reason for that. There is a gap between word and spirit. The words of scripture are narrative, descriptive, or expository.I submit that on our spiritual journey transcendent levels can be reached that are outside the realms of narration, description, or exposition – beyond words or what they are meant to convey. It is here that we experience the Holy Spirit – the spirit of God.
The irony is that here, at this point, I would try to go on and explain or describe my conception of the Holy Spirit in words. This is the way of the flesh – words! Yet, in trying to fathom the mystery of the Spirit words are what we go to first. It seems futile to try to explain in words that for which there are no words, but I’ll go ahead anyway.
My all-pervading apprehension of the Holy Spirit is the simple one we learned as children: the Holy Spirit is the love for mankind generated between the Father and You. Thus the interjections of the Father into the world of men through You is the working of the Spirit. The life You lived, what You taught, and Your passion and death are the work of the Spirit. Little do we realize it but we deal more with the movements of the Spirit in our daily lives than we ever stop to imagine. In fact, though we may eschew or dismiss it, the Spirit of God lives in us. It is closer, in a sense, than You or the Father might seem to be.
The sign that the Spirit is in us and in the world is love. The love between You and the Father dwells in us. It is there in the worst and the best of us. To be moved by the Spirit is to be moved by love. We actually know the Spirit well – like we know certain people well, but ignore them. If the Spirit is not ignored but rather pursued it is evident – it is love! The Spirit touches all and, if we are of the Spirit, the spirit of our love touches all.
