My own spiritual path relies greatly on reading and writing but I wonder if my reading and writing don’t, in some ways, conflict with just letting You act in my life. If crutches help us to walk when our legs are bad it seems odd to continue using them when we’re well just because we’re used to them. I do not think that I am at a point spiritually where I do not need crutches, but I do think they‘re ultimately unnecessary for where I’d like to be.
It is, at this point, unavoidably true that whatever progress I am making is coming through the words I read and write. There is a great fear that I’ll be missing something if I just drop them. Yet the thought gnaws at me that maybe, at some point, I’d be better off without them. It seems obvious to me that if a person was offered the choice of reading about You and the choice of simplybeing silently alone with You to hear Your voice, the latter choice would be the best.
By the same token, it is true that You have left us Your written word in scriptures to be read. You meet us where we are at. You can meet us in what we read. You can meet us in what we write. If we limit ourselves to just these You will find a way. It may be more difficult for You than if we simply listened silently, but our obstacles can be Your vehicles.
I heard in a priest’s homily on the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas the words: “The highest form of knowledge is the knowledge of God.” When we use everything humanly available to obtain that knowledge it must be pleasing to You.
