Ever had someone say to you “You must do a certain thing” and the emphasis was on the “must”. I have on many an occasion. I goggled my dictionary online and wanted to really see what the word “must” really meant and this is what I read, “to be under the necessity of”; or “to be compelled to in order to fulfill some need or achieve some aim”. As a kid growing up I heard the word “must” in many a conversation from my parents. “You must obey or else”; “You must clean your room”; “You must get your act together”; “Your attitude must become right by the time I get back” and so forth. And, if I did not, there were certain levels of punishment that would then be inflicted for not following through with certain commands.
Some time back I decided to do a word search in the word of God and find out how many things I “must” do that are commands of scripture. It was an interesting insight needless to say for me. Perhaps they might be for you as well. There is a compelling in every verse. You can hear the sound even as you read over the scripture. Listen closely. For example, I read what Jesus told Nicodemus in a late night conversation with the ruler of the Jews, “Marvel not…You must be born again”(John 3:7 KJV). It shook the ruler of the Jews when he heard that statement. It was new. It was powerful. It was different. It still shakes people today. But, there is no other way into the freedom that Jesus provides without this “must” being at the forefront of every one of our lives. Here is another. “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly…”(Proverbs 18:24 KJV) You almost want to go “duh”. But, not everyone is. Even some believers. Ever been in a congregation perhaps for the very first time and you felt like you stuck out like a sore thumb? People moved all about you, yet you were left unnoticed? It is because they have perhaps never read Solomon’s advice. All I can say is you and I had better be friendly enough to get six friends. We will need them some day (lol).
Our world is rocking and reeling in an unbelievable fashion at this very moment. Nations are under stress. Financial woes abound all around the globe. Distress of nations can be felt. Wars, earthquakes, famines. They are everywhere. But, Jesus Himself said, “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of war: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet” (Matthew 24:6 KJV). Yes I know the end is not yet, but I can tell you that it is getting closer by the hour. I read this, “And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles”(Mark 2:22 KJV). In other words, the way we use to do it is dead and gone if you and I are going to flow with the Holy Spirit in these last days. The Spirit of God thinks outside the box. He is not confined to our way of thinking or doing things. The dead formalism of dry religion will not work in this generation. A fresh wind is blowing across the body of Christ. A new wine is being poured out on those who are thirsty. The best has been saved till the last. But, if you and I are to become carriers of this new anointing of the Spirit of God, the days of looking back are over. Stay focused on what lies ahead. Prepare your heart. Allow God to change your old dried up shriveled wineskins. The “same ol, same ol” will not work. New wine is upon the church for those who are thirsty.
Let me give you a couple more. There are others, but these will suffice. I read, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”(Acts 4:12 KJV). Did you catch that statement given by Peter as God’s Spirit flowed through him? Religion can’t save you. Works can’t save you. Good deeds can’t save you. Only one name. Not many names. Only one. Jesus. There is no other choice. You and I must come God’s way or we can’t come at all.
There is one more. Here is a must that I recoil against. It is a tough one. Yet, one that you and I will have to endure. Paul spoke it after being plummeted by rocks and left for dead. When he got up he declared, “…exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God”(Acts 14:22 KJV). The word “tribulation” means “pressure”. You can feel it, I can feel it. Like a new born babe going through the birth canal to come screaming its way into this world, you and I are being pressured at this very moment just like that. The body of Christ is in the birth canal. We are headfirst. The birth pangs are getting stronger. Don’t give up. Keep pushing. A kingdom is about to burst forth on us. And beloved it will be worth it all when we see Christ!!!!!!!
