The Pressure to Compromise

I was not part of the decision making team. I was not even called to express my opinion. I did not expect to be. But, today I have to question, without having a critical attitude towards a long time Christian ministry that has taken the name Christ out of their title and have to wonder why. Is the name Christ now too offensive? I thought the name Jesus was to too many people. Are you doing it to “fit” into today’s PC crowd? Is it even because as you minister on college campuses there are far too many that no longer even know or even understand what the name Christ actually means? By now many of you reading this perhaps even wonder what am I even referring to? Let me explain.

This week on websites dealing with nothing but information from the world of Christianity many people read where the organization called Campus Crusade for Christ made a major decision to remove the name Christ from their title and are now simply called “CRU”. The organization founded in 1951 is a ministry on college campuses not only in America, but around the world. The leadership stated the reason for the name change was that overseas the name Christ had a bad connotation attached to it. They quickly stated that it had nothing to do with being politically correct. And they said that their mission of presenting the gospel would continue to remain strong.
There is not a one of us that cannot feel the pressure being squeezed on the body of Christ at this very moment to compromise. Pastor’s feel it. Papa-church organizations feel it.  Individuals setting in church pews can feel it. Because of that pressure to change we have found ourselves in a time when it is much easier to be politically correct that God correct. I am reminded of what God’s word says when writing to the body of Christ in Rome Paul stated, “So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”(Romans 12:1-2 The Message) Is this our problem that now we have become “well-adjusted to our culture”? Perhaps so.  And in so many areas and in so many venues there are those winds of changing blowing upon the body of Christ asking us to give in to the world’s way of thinking.
Years ago I heard an illustration that paints the picture of cultural change upon the body of Christ so well. The person giving it stated, “If you were to take a hot boiling pan of water and throw a frog into the water the frog would immediately get out. But, if you took that same frog, placed it in a normal pan of water and slowly brought the water to a boil the frog would die before it realized that its environment had changed. “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ (“the anointed one” my words): for, it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth…”(Romans 1:16 KJV), Paul stated emphatically.
I realize my blog is my own opinion. I’m not trying to be hard-nosed. Perhaps we have reached the boiling point in society. Take a close look at the American “Christian” community. We have churches that are largely unbiblical and weak theologically. We have bible colleges that look no different than secular campuses. We have gospel broadcasts that entertain and offer no substance. We have become so well-adjusted that we can now fit into our cultural without even thinking.
My purpose is not to leave us on a down note at the end of another week, just perhaps a shot in the arm to shake ourselves a bit. You and I are being squeezed. We are being asked to compromise. To become PC. May God help us all to be strong, stable and secure in Him in these last days because the water is at a boiling stage all over this globe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
