Let Your Intuition Be Your Guide

Her magazine is popular as was her television show. She is the voice for millions of people. I don’t mean for this to sound tacky or rude or even vicious, but she is not always right. She gives advice based solely from a humanistic view point. Her latest magazine bears that out. The lead article bears that out. The title is this, “Let Your Intuition Be Your Guide”. She also stated on the cover of the August 2011 issue, “All the major moves in my life, I’ve trusted my instincts”. That might be alright for Oprah, but it is not alright for a child of God.
I’m honestly not trying to start an argument in my blog today with anyone, but I am not certain that we have not tried to do the work of God often from the level of intuition. Some might call it common sense. Others might refer to it as a “sixth sense”. But, honestly, anything outside the realm of the leadership of the Holy Spirit is nothing more than humanism. It is leaning to our own understanding. And to be honest I can’t always see the big picture. It was not intuition that spoke to me one evening as I was attending “a bible study” in a home in another state. The chairs were all in a circle. Several had gathered for the evening. I was a guest of another guy who asked me to attend with him. He was across from me and as soon as I sat in the chair I heard a voice inside me that was like a shout and the words, “get out of here now” rang down to my toes almost. It was not an audible voice. But a voice I knew. And as soon as I heard that voice my friend said to me, “Gary, do you want to go”? I said yes and out the door we went. I did not stick around to see what that group was going to be studying for the evening but I am certain it was not truth based on the word of God.
Solomon penned the words this way, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy way acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths”. (Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV) Then he wrote, “Be not wise in thine own eyes…” (Proverbs 3:7(a) KJV) There is a deep concern within my heart that if we are not careful as the body of Christ we have a tendency to be lean to our own inner voice and not the voice of the Holy Spirit. Feel free to disagree but I am not certain that Matthias was not chosen that way during the business session of the 120 who were suppose to be waiting for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised he would send. There is not a one of us who does not feel that at times we have to help God out. It’s hard for any of us to hold steady. And those in the Upper Room were no different. They “cast lots”, they rolled the dice so to speak, and they leaned on their own understanding.
The Holy Spirit is not intuition. He is not a “sixth sense”. But we often can hear our intuition more than we can hear Him. Intuition often causes things to appear right and good that are not always so. Ask Eve. The serpent enticed her to the place where from an inner voice which was not the voice of God she saw something through her eye-gate that appeared good to the natural senses, but has caused heartache and problems since that day. Ask King Saul who no longer could hear the voice of God for himself so he finds a witch to offer him counsel that proved deadly. Ask Judas who holds thirty pieces of silver in his hand because his intuition got the best of him and he thought he could force Jesus’ hand.
I disagree with Oprah. She is not the gospel. I don’t need my intuition guiding me, I need the Holy Spirit. He guides me by the word of God. He guides me through wise and godly men and women who speak into my life. He guides me as I seek His face. He guides me with His eye as my focus is on Him. He guides me by truth. He guides me never away from Jesus, but always towards Him.
Are there decisions in your future? Are there obstacles in your path? Are there issues you face that weigh you down? Are there answers for which you seek? Lay aside now your natural tendency to figure things out on your own. Jesus said of the Holy Spirit, “...the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you”. (John 14:17 KJV) You can’t go wrong operating your life from that perspective!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
