God does not act in a person’s life in ways that would diminish it nor does He answer prayers that would diminish our spirit. Life, of its nature, is meant to be increased, enhanced, magnified and nourished. Life is the spirit of God in us that moves ever forward towards its source. Whatever detour, blocks or reverses it is not from its source. Too often we almost unconsciously perceive ourselves to be the source of our own lives. These are the times of such detours and derailments.
Letting go and just resting in God (especially within the routines of our daily lives) does not come easily. Yet, at the same time, I think it’s off the mark to equate what does come easily with what diminishes our spiritual life. I know that for the most part is seems that only what is difficult and takes great effort magnifies the spirit. But consider what is simple. Consider that we have deviated from the simple and complicated our lives so that getting back to the simple seems difficult. And the spiritual life is very much about getting back to the simple.
Our nature, at its simplest, is spiritual. It is already in us. It’s not difficult, it’s elemental. The simplest thing in the world is our spirit. Our spirit is our life. It is not complicated. It is not difficult. Yet it must be found, recognized and accepted; and we make that difficult. We diminish it. In such times that we diminish it we work against it and complicate it. It is not You. It is us. So when we petition You for this or that and our enduring prayers seem to go unanswered, it might be well to consider that what we seek may ultimately diminish life or diminish our spirit, and You do not act in a person’s life in ways that would diminish it. Only we do that.
