Fires, devastating tornadoes, high unemployment, home foreclosures, high gas prices, earthquakes, drought, national debt out of control, is America under divine judgment? Have we sown to the wind for so long as a nation that now we are reaping a whirlwind? Like Israel of old has God had it with this nation from constantly thumbing our noses at Him? Have we crossed a line of no return? Shocking it was to hear this week that 40% of this nation now believes that the economy is so bad that it will never return to its former glory. I have awaken this first day of a new month and only days from this nation’s birthday asking myself those questions inside my own heart.
I love America. I don’t like what I am seeing taking place in our nation at this very moment, but I am thankful to God Almighty I was born in this nation.Yet, I am deeply concerned as we faced the 235th birthday, can America survive? Get your Bible and read in the next few days the 5th chapter of Isaiah. Yes, the word is to Israel of old, but according to Paul, the things that happened to Israel were written for our learning. I went back over that chapter myself and took a real hard look at what is transpiring in this nation of ours and wonder if God is not speaking to America with all the things that are happening right before our very eyes. For example, verse 5 God said that he would remove the hedge. Remember Satan’s conversation with God about Job? He accused God of putting a hedge of protection around him and requested a lifting of that hedge.Verse 6 informs us that God said he would remove the clouds that they rain not. This week while listening to a meteorologist I was shocked when he stated that the last moisture Amarillo, Texas had was back in February of this year and that was because there was a snowfall.Verse 9 God declared to his prophet that many houses would be desolate, and great and beautiful ones without inhabitants. There are now more foreclosures than at any other time in our history. Verse 20 speaks of a day when people will call good evil and evil good. Verse 23 informs us that there will be a justice system so corrupt that those who are guilty of crimes and evil deeds would be let off because of the payment of money on the side. I am not a prophet, the Spirit of God has not laid that mantel on me, yet there is enough of God inside my life to stop and ponder this chapter of Isaiah and wonder deeply if our nation is not at this place already.
Sometime ago I took the cog train up the side of Pike’s Peak in the State of Colorado and came to a place on the ride where the conductor asked everyone to view the scene that was before us. The mountains honestly had a purple hue to them. He told us that this was the place where the inspiration came from to the song written by Katharine Lee Bates. I loved hearing the late Ray Charles sing it. The first few words of that great song are as follows, “O beautiful for spaciousskies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties, Above the fruited plain!America! America!God shed his grace on thee…”We need God’s grace once again. We need His mercy. Is it enough for the mayor of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to call for 3 days of fasting and prayer for her cities financial recovery enough to do the job? Can the Governor of Texas Rick Perry make a difference with Heaven when he has asked other governor’s and religious leaders to join him in a day of repentance at a gathering in Houston next month in August? Will God hear? Will He answer?
These are bleak times for this nation. My heart weeps at the condition I see her in. In my spirit I see us hooked up to a breathing machine because our condition is terminal. What’s the answer? Can the church turn things around? Can the body of Christ rise up in this hour to make a difference? 2 Chronicles 7:14 is still the answer because God promised He would heal our land if we followed His prerequisites. So, as we near the birthday of this great nation I am not ready to wash my hands. Nor do I believe God is either. So the cry of my heart is “God bless America, land that I love, stand beside her and guide her, through the night, with a light from above”... If He does not then we have no other than can help!!!!!!!!
