Poor, poor Stephen Hawking. Many may not recognize his name but he is England’s most recognized scientist. At the age of 21 he was diagnosed with an incurable debilitating disease that has left his body in a horrible condition. Stephen Hawking was born in a country that favors humanism. A country that once shook under the powerful anointed preaching of such men as Dwight L. Moody and other powerful preachers. Today most of England’s churches are nothing more that museums. Relics of what use to be. Perhaps that is why this scientist has come to the conclusion that heaven is simply a fairy tale. Mr. Hawkins through his brilliant mind has come to the conclusion that when the brain stops functioning there are no longer any brain waves and death has come upon a person there is nothing beyond this life. How sad that Stephen Hawking, who not only has a voice, but influence in his country and around the world would, come to this conclusion.
Honestly it would do no good to bring someone back from the dead and have them stand in front of Stephen Hawking and tell him the truth. Most of us think that would help, but Jesus said it would not. Remember the rich man and Lazarus? Both died. One was in hell immediately and became a missionary after death. He begged God to send someone to testify to his family. The rich man tried to persuade God that one coming back from the dead was a great communicator. Then Jesus said this, “…If they hear not Moses and the prophets,(God’s word,) neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead”.(Luke 16:31 KJV) Stephen Hawking may believe that heaven is a fairy tale, but the rich man did not.
If heaven is a fairy tale, I boldly declare that I have staked my life on a fairy tale. And so have many others. Abraham “looked for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker isGod” (Hebrews 11:10 KJV). Jesus told a rag tag group of men who staked their life and reputation on the Man from Galilee that he was going to prepare a place for them. The apostle Paul wrote to a church in Corinth that he saw things in that place that he could not even talk about. King David penned words under the Spirit’s guidance about heaven. And as a pastor I have stood at the grave of many a saint that has died in faith believing that there was more in the after-life than in this. And there is.
Honestly my mind cannot compare with the mind of Stephen Hawking. His is brilliant. His thought processes has undoubtedly been awe-inspiring to people all over the world. But, his heart is foolish. In fact, David wrote, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God….”(Psalm 53:1 KJV) If there is no God then there is no heaven and it all would be a fairy tale. When the brain waves stopped functioning and the life has ended on this side we all would simply go back to dust. But, to all the Stephen Hawkings of the world I do have a word for you. Go ahead and laugh at us simple minded people. Go ahead and call us crazy for staking our entire lives on the words of a man. Go ahead and poke fun of the fact that we believe in what you call a fairy tale. But, if it is a fairy tale it is a fairy tale that is true.
Poor, poor Stephen Hawking. Much learning has made you mad. I choose to believe. I choose to believe in a heaven, I choose to believe in a hell. I choose to believe in the resurrection, I choose to believe in God’s word. I will continue to stake my life on its truth. And when my brain waves stop coming and my life cease to exist on this side, I will exist and so will you!!!!!!!!!!
