The Power of Prayer

Tomorrow, May 5, 2011, across America will be a National Day of Prayer. My how we need it. And yet, many wonder if prayer really works. Does God actually hear? Can He do anything about the problems and circumstances I find myself in? Does He really have the power to move obstacles out of my way? Why should I pray if I have the power and the means to work out my own situation?  Someone said to me recently, “I have never asked God for direction in my life, not one time”.

If there was ever a time when we needed to pray, and a generation that needed prayer, this is both. Yet, the body of Christ here in our nation seems stagnant. We hold seminars on prayer. Conduct workshops on the how two’s of prayer. Write books and periodicals on the power of prayer. Still, we sat almost desensitized to the needs all around us and we hurry and scurry through life.

I watched the power of prayer in effect when my wife stepped off our church platform on Tuesday turning her ankle she heard it pop. I was in a different part of the building and hearing her cry out immediately made my way to her lying on the floor in pain. With so much work still to be done neither of us could afford to be done at this particular point in time. I reached my hand out and placed it on her ankle. Asking in prayer for a miracle in no time she was up walking once again. Coincidence? I don’t think so. I believe as she and I agreed together in prayer God came on the scene and immediately did that which neither of us was able to do.

I believe in the power of prayer. I believe God hears and God answers. Faith must operate for prayer to be effective. That is what God’s word teaches. The writer to the Hebrews stated that the person who comes to God must believe that He is. Is what? Is whatever we need. And that He is a rewarder. That God is not stingy with His answers to our prayers.

I have always been intrigued by the verse found in Deuteronomy that talks about one putting a thousand, but two ten thousand. That is hard to imagine. In my mind if one can cause a thousand enemy forces to flee for cover then if two of us agree then two thousand should be the next sequence of events. But, not so in God’s economics.  Can you imagine how powerful a man and wife are in prayer when they both are in agreement? Awesome results transpire. Mountains drop before us. The enemy cannot stand for a couple to come together in the prayer of agreement because he knows then that his kingdom is defeated.

I challenge you tomorrow when many will join in the National day of Prayer to find someone to stand with you in agreement over the things that you need God to do for you. Is it a miracle that you need? Do doors of opportunity need to be opened? Is sickness dogging your steps? Has the enemy brought you doubt and discouragement? Are your finances stuck in the mire? Are your relationships suffering? Honestly it does not matter what you and I face right now. My God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we are able to ask or think. All He asks is that we come expectantly into His presence. Knock on His door through the vehicle of prayer. Stand in agreement with another. If two of you shall agree, Jesus said. So let’s agree. Let’s see God work. Let let Heaven enter into your mess. Nothing is impossible. Prayer does work for those who work it!!!!!!!!!
