A person who does not fully understand or appreciate the technological age may ask, "Why do you want to waste time on a blog?" That is, if they even know what a blog is. ;-) Well, it is really very simple.
At this time I am looking for a place to preach. Without going into a long soliloquy on whether or not this is the best way by which to narrow down a preacher search, it is not uncommon for a congregation to send me a "questionaire" once I send them my resume. They want to know what my position is on several key issues. They are almost always the same issues. I've taken to saving several of the questonaires so as to speed up the process of answering the same question over and over again.
What I'd really LIKE to do with these questionaires is to write one thing across the top and send it back to them. "I do not have a position. God has a position. If He inspired one of his authors to write it down in His Word, that is what I preach. Otherwise, I don't let it bog me down." But I know that wouldn't endear me to anyone.
In addition, I have been watching over the last couple years and I see a lot of preachers making a move toward blogging. So, short answer to why would I waste time with it is, it ISN'T a waste of time. It puts teaching or just thought out there for others to read, and hopefully it will be of some help. Someone who may be dealing with a particular problem may stumble across a blog post I make about that very problem, a person interested in a Bible subject may stumble across a blog post I make about that subject ... I know I have been helped by this type of thing in the past.
The longer and less important answer is that as a preacher, I like to talk, and this gives me a place to out a lot of my thoughts down on paper (albeit electronic paper). Perhaps I will have need for articles on certain subjects in the future, and I can find them here. Lastly, when prospective congregations want to see a sample of my writing, I can point them here.
I have no specific plan for this blog. Hopefully I won't just get tired of it and not write anything - but with my peronality I don't think that's going to be a problem. Some days I may think of a few things I need to write about, while other days I won't update at all. We'll just have to see how it goes.
