Letters to Jesus (Ego, False Self and Groundhog Day)-16
Without the resurrection all else is foolishness. This was mentioned recently in a homily I heard and it gave me pause for reflection.
We have great devotion to Your passion and death on the cross. The cross has itself become the symbol of our faith. But without the resurrection even the cross is foolishness. All the prayers, devotions and good works of our lives and the lives of all the saints are, without the resurrection, foolishness. The fact that by Your rising You gave meaning to everything that went before it gives us the hope that all the foolishness of our own lives is as nothing compared to finally rising with You. So, how does all this life’s foolishness, its labors, its pains, successes, failures, loves, hates, joy, sorrow, grief, mourning have any meaning at all? That is to say, simply put, how does day-in-and-day-out life have any meaning?
The answer is that its meaning lies in the giving of all that is in our life, all its foolishness, to You as You gave all to us and commended the spirit behind all that giving to the Father who will raise us up as He did You. The loving spirit behind turning all this foolishness into a gift – the best gift we are empowered to give if we so will – will raise us up, not only each day but ultimately forever.
The motion of life with all its intricate choreography, its complicated relationships, and its cataclysmic events, must be directed by us.As complex and frustrating as it is, as seemingly futile as it so often becomes, it is up to us to point it all in the right direction so that while we witness this strutting and fretting upon life’s stage as various degrees of pompous, self-serving histrionics signifying nothing, it is the only vehicle available to carry us to resurrection with You. And in the sense that it has this capability, it is not foolishness. Yet, without this capability it is. This, then, is to say that without You birth, death and whatever falls between is meaningless. The resurrection takes life to an entirely different level and beyond. So it is that we become glued to the wisdom of this foolishness.
