Growing up in the church, I heard the gospel preached. The fact is, that was all I did. I heard it, but it did not take root in my life till many years later. I would sit in church on Sunday morning, and would live like the world the rest of the week. I had a head knowledge of Jesus, but not a heart knowledge. I knew of Him, but I did not know Him.
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
It is not enough just to hear the gospel preached. You need to believe in your heart, and confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior. As Christians, we need to keep planting the seed, so when the time is right, the seed will start to grow, and eventually bear fruit.
