I remember one Christmas that my mother was very ill. She had just gotten home from the hospital, and that night a man dressed as Santa showed up at the door with presents. To this day we do not know who it was. There was no fanfare, but his good deed touched a family and some 35 years later is remembered.
"Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
We are not to do our charitable deeds so that we will be seen by men. It is the gift that is given in secret that is cherished the most. Give out of love.
