Some might wonder if commentary on atheists belongs on a site like this one. I even wondered about it myself and decided to go ahead with it. My thoughts are that other Christians must encounter them from time to time and I'm curious to know what they do. Atheists are people in need of God's word just like the rest of us, although they are more resistant to it and are more difficult to work with, because they don't believe that the Bible is the word of God, so our main tool seems useless to us. But the Lord says in Matthew 19:26 with God all things are possible."
Most of the atheists that I have spoken to all seem to tell me the same things. They say that Christians are narrow minded, we are stupid to believe in God, they don't like organized religion, science has all the answers etc. It seems to me that atheists have more of a problem with Christianity "as a religion" than with individual Christians. Like anyone else atheists don't like being told they're sinners and need God's forgiveness. They also don't like hearing that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation that God will accept. Some atheists tell me the old story that they don't need Christ because they are living a good life, and if it turns out that there is a God, they believe that he will take this into account with them, but the Bible teaches otherwise. An atheist can be a tough nut to crack (as the old saying goes,) but we as Christians should remember that all people need to hear about Christ, and atheists are just unbelievers who are more vocal and are more willing to go out of their way to avoid the Gospel. We as Christians can't always expect to be sent to the "soft targets." I believe this is what Jesus means in Luke 10:3 I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. http://www.thoughts.com/banty/blog
