Bible Similes ~ The Word of God likens itself to a number of practical items. “The Word is like…” In this series we will look at some of the similes of the Bible which are presented clearly in the Bible itself.
Comment ~ Up to this point in this series we first looked at food items—which are good for consumption, digestion, nourishment (life sustaining), and enjoyment. Next we looked at some tools—which are useful for daily living. In this post we see the Word of God being likened to gold—a raw material of great value.
Like Gold~ “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:7-11).
Application ~ Like other raw material we can allow it to remain in its present form or we can make valuable use of what we have been given. That is the secret to the Word of God. First, acknowledge you have access to supreme value and then act upon that fact. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:22-25).
Summary ~ How about you? Is the Word of God a buffet of spiritual food for your soul… for your life? Is the Word of God a useful tool box full of principles and guidance for making your way through life. Do you value the Word of God more highly than material possessions? If not, why not?
