Public lighting accounts for 40% of the city's electricity consumption. The company claims that it is not surprising that the smart public lighting(CLASSIC) market is growing at an alarming rate due to the huge space available in lighting control systems. The development of LEDs, sensors and wireless technology is considered to be the main driver. As part of a broader smart city initiative, the largest opportunity area in the market is pointed to the prospect of integration with other important systems such as traffic signals, smart meters, pollution sensors, parking lights and traffic sensors.
Through the benefits of control and integration, the cost of LED lamps for public lighting has been drastically reduced, driving sales growth. Unit shipments of LED public lighting grew rapidly year-on-year. By 2015, LED will be the second leading streetlight type behind high-pressure sodium. By 2020, research results show that LED lights for streetlights will generate more than $2 billion in annual revenue. The report points out that smart public lighting can provide the backbone for other smart city applications.
