There has been a definitive shift in the way our leaders go about problem-solving and getting anything accomplished. At one time, what was proposed was discussed, negotiated, and amended and then accepted. In the days of Presidents Reagan and Clinton, compromise was required and accomplished and mostly with a congress which was held by a majority of the opposite party. They modeled how people worked together when they held different views.
Where have we gone and gone wrong? Today, nothing is accomplished because no one can hear the other side through the screaming and marching and the scathing insults that dominate social media and readily available platforms for hate provided by national news outlets. People aren't even in the same room anymore talking or trying to hear what the other side is saying. I quit watching the news 2 1/2 years ago and I can still hear them screaming. Is this how we intend to get things done going forward? By seeing who can yell the loudest or insult the deepest. That's how the people of ancient Rome decided things ... the person who yelled the loudest or was able to eliminate (literally eliminate) the competition the soonest was elected or had his way.
In the New Testament, Paul wrote this to the people in Philippi.
" ...whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."
I think this passage needs to be on the walls of every building in Washington, every capital in every state of this country and even in every dining room of every home .... any place people gather to discuss anything. It should be the home screen on our computers and our mobile phones so that when we go to send a message or reply to a social media comment, it will guide the post or repsonse. People need to think upon what is noble, righteous, admirable, and excellent and not what tears us down and alienates us. Unless we see this type of example from our leaders, we will never trust that anything they do accomplish is noble or excellent.
