John 8

Read the whole chapter of John 8 first.

“21 Then Jesus said to them again, ‘I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.’

22 So the Jews said, ‘Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?’

23 And He said to them, ‘You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’

Jesus was talking to Jewish leaders, men who believed in GOD, but because of their religion they did not know Him, nor recognize His Son, their Messiah. Since they do not believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, resisted every temptation, willing and obediently would go to the cross to give His life as the final sacrifice for the sins of the whole human race (past, present, and future). That He would rise on the third day having defeated death and hell, taking the keys of their dominions and proclaim liberty to the captives. Therefore they cannot enter into GOD’s Kingdom, the place where Jesus is going so they would die in their sin.

The Jewish leaders did not even catch His point, as you can see by their conversation in verses 21-24. Religion which is a form of pride kills faith in the truth and leads to hell. We have the same issue in the church today. Pride causes us to believe doctrine over scripture, to follow dogma rather than the Holy Spirit. That is why some “believers” will be shocked when they hear Jesus’ words of Matthew 7:21-23, “21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Pride is “I don’t need GOD I can do it myself. “ Pride is lawlessness, it is rebellion against GOD. Pride is what leads us to hell there is no pride in heaven, only humility. Jesus said in Matthew 5:20, For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” And Paul says in Romans 1:28-32, “And even as they did not like to retain GOD in their knowledge, GOD gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”
