Living as a Contra-normal Person: Living Against and Above the Norm
We all know what it means to be living as a normal human being, but I can tell you as a Christian, normal is not enough! All Christians should try to live their lives to the fullest and live against and above normal, such as normal, for the most part, is today.
When I write against, I do not mean that we are to act abnormal, but we must look and evaluate what has become the norm today. Today, normal is not the way God set forth. God’s normal is living in accordance with His way. His way is made clear to us in the Bible.
God hates sin. He is love, but He is holy, and wants us to live holy lives. So we will also, as we commit to Christ, going against and above what the world seems to consider the norm. Jesus is the only one that is able to radically change us into people who walk against the accepted norm and rise above and beyond it. We all need Jesus to step in and save us; we are all going to go under if we don’t have Jesus rescue us. For the non believer, let God and Jesus be your rescue and save you before it’s too late.
What does it mean to be contra-normal? It simply means to live beyond the world and live for Jesus. Your life centers around God and not on you. Your life revolves around Him and no one else. It simply means to live Godly and pursue godly endeavors. Worship God, and do not worship the world and worldly things. It means going out of your way to do things to help the world and doing things for God, to help people in need, and help the community, do things as Jesus did; live like Jesus.
As a Christian, everything you do in your life you do for God and no one else. God becomes the focal point of all. You walk in faith trusting Him to meet your needs. This does not mean to just sit still and God magically drops needs in your lap, although He is capable of doing that, He knows we need a purpose. As we take a step, God takes two. We want to do things that will please God; anything that you are able to do, that can make the world a better place; do it! If more people would get involved and be like Jesus, this world would definitely be a better place. Let it begin with you, in your corner of the world. Many small changes can make a big difference in people’s lives.
Most non believers wouldn’t understand the contra-normal life and most of them would ridicule you and think that you’re crazy or weird. When you have Jesus, that kind of thing won’t be a bother to you. It shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks of you because Jesus is the only one that matters.
Christians are going to face judgment from non believers, but as long as you have your strong faith to keep pushing you forward, doing what is right, then you will always be strong and have confidence and won’t give up on it. Nothing that people say is important and it means nothing. Don’t ever let someone’s words affect you and test your faith. Nobody has the right to tell you what you should or shouldn’t believe.
We all have a choice and Christians should make the choice to live beyond normal. God has created you for great things, but they are only found in His power and through His supernatural actions. To become a contra-normal person, we have to cry out to God to save us.
A life of sin, and the hollowness that comes with it, has become normal in today’s society. Most people live in sin like it’s nothing. Most of them are broken and are not saved, but they need to be awakened and change their lives.
There is too much sin in the world today and more people are being influenced the wrong way. By making people believe that it’s okay; when in reality; they don’t know the truth.
Paul writes here in Romans 1:28-38: “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
Another good example for the truth is the scripture from John 8:32 “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free!” -Jesus Christ. People need to follow God and to know the real truth. The truth is that sin is not normal; it brings you down a dark path and will pull you under.
Nobody is perfect, everybody has sinned. I myself have sinned, there is no perfect person. We all hit bumpy roads. God woke me up and brought me out of sin. He saved me before I went under and ruined my life.
Satan will do anything to keep you away from God and will do anything to keep you in sin, so you do not fulfill God’s intended purpose in your life. He doesn’t want people to be saved and go to heaven. God has more power and can beat Satan and can save anyone. God gave us free will, and we have to choose Him. He does not force Himself on us. We make a conscious choice to choose the Lord, and life. God loves every single one of us, even if we don’t love back or believe in him. He wants everyone to go to heaven.
The Bible reads in 2 Peter 3:9- “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
God can bring us all out of sin, but we have to open the door to be saved. We make the choice to believe or not. God forgives everyone, no matter what you did in your life, or in your past, no matter what sins you have committed, you will always be forgiven, as long as you ask repent from your heart, and commit to live a Godly clean life. Your past won’t matter, only the person you are in Christ matters.
Jesus died on the cross for all of our sins to be forgiven so we can go to heaven. That is why we can be forgiven. Know that no matter what you do, you will be forgiven. Sin is not normal no matter what people tell you, you need to go beyond and be contra-normal and live a life without sin.
When you’re living a contra-normal life, you are living for God and refraining from sin, by the help of the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit of God in us, we cannot live a clean life that is pleasing to God.
You, with Christ, are able to do extraordinary things! He gives us strength to be all that we can be in a way that pleases God. It’s all about changing the world and pointing people to Jesus so He can save them. You live as a positive influence to people and live a clean life. It’s definitely not an easy thing, especially with all the influence in society that will come at you. When you have God and bring him into your life, it becomes easier. God will influence you more and more and you will want to live the right way for him.
Sin is sneaky. When we commit sin it feels good for a time. We may begin small by a compromise of our principles. When you sin and do not repent, or do not continuously read the Word, you become desensitized to sin. It becomes a type of blindness. As you commit more sin you sink deeper, until, it is not even noticed.
When you come to Jesus and He gives you the Holy Spirit, you see clearly. What you thought was ok before, you see as disgusting. You begin to hate sin and love God more and more. This causes you to walk away from sin. You will be tempted, but now with the eyes of the Holy Ghost, you want to please God and you see the filth of sin and want to run from it.
I made a commitment to God to live as a contra-normal person and you can do it as well. If you want to be that person, and be committed to God and be more than the average normal, then make the wise decision to come to Christ, or recommit if you have fallen away. Don’t let anyone influence you not too. It’s your choice and no one else’s.
We take a step, God takes two. We need to walk away, choose to walk away from any negative influences and behaviors. These include drugs, alcohol, fornication, violence, cussing, gossiping, secular music/movies, worshiping worldly things, etc. I am not saying that all secular movies and music are bad, but the ones that influence or have fornication, nudity, graphic/brutal violence, or gore, drugs, alcohol, partying, strong cussing, or anything that has to do with Satanism, occultism, witchcraft, or anything that blasphemes God or Jesus. It is important to stay morally clean and avoid those types of secular things when you are following God.
When I write non believers, I do not mean abandon them. Pray for them, but we cannot have people who live and partake of ungodly behaviors entrenched in our lives. We sometimes have to leave the past behaviors and the people that we sinned with behind, and just keep praying. All you can is pray every day for those people to be saved, and leave it to God. You need to keep them at a distance. It’s definitely hard to let go of those people at first, but God is the better person to have and will bring you better and Godly people who will be a positive influence.
Don’t worship worldly things such as cars, money, idols, clothes, jewelry, the latest phone, other forms of technology, etc., just live for God and only Him. The more you walk with God, the more the things of the world seem frivolous and unneeded. None of that stuff will be important to you. None of that stuff is really so frivolous to have when you have Jesus.
Don’t let Satan pull you down. Do not be mediocre; be contra-normal in Christ. Live for Him, like Him and your life will be at peace, even in the midst of the storm. I am a person who will never settle for “normal!”
I encourage you to take a step above the norm and be your own person. Don’t follow the crowd or do what everyone else is doing. Be your own person and do what is right in God’s eyes. God will keep balanced in the right path and with Him, it is easy to stay away from sin. He is the answer to your questions. If you want to live above and against the norm, you do it with God by your side!
