Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. He never said it would be free of strife or tough choices. In fact He spoke of it causing division (Matthew 10:34). And one of the things we need to be prepared for is the times when we have to make a choice. Will we please another person or will we please our Heavenly Father.
We would like to think that this would never come up, but if you seek to obey God it will at some point. You may have to please God instead of your friend or co-worker. Maybe your co-worker wants you to go along with them in some shady work practices, or maybe even your boss wants you to do something dishonest. If you please God in these situations you are certainly going to displease your boss and co-workers. or maybe a friend wants you to go somewhere that you know you have no business going. Displeasing a friend can be a little harder to do. But in the end we must ask ourselves: "Is my friend the Lord of my life or is it Jesus ?". Upsetting a friend is never easy, but that is the choice we have to make at times.
Whats even harder is when the person is someone we love such as a spouse, a child, or a parent. This is really where the rubber meets the road. It can be so hard to displease those we love and care about. But Jesus is our Lord and Saviour, our ultimate allegience is to Him. Is this easy ? Of course not. And I have to admit that ive failed many times in this area.
You can rest assured that if you are doing your best to live for Jesus there will come a time when you will have to choose to please God or please man. in fact I believe that God will orchestrate it to test and prove us. The wise thing is to decide in advance that we are going to please God before we please anyone else, including ourselves. When we make that committment it will be easier to stay stedfast in our obedience to God.
Can pleasing God over pleasing others be costly ? Yes it can. In fact at times it can be very costly. But not near as costly as disobeying God. Not near as costly as disappointing our Heavenly Father.
Im certainly not a poster child for pleasing God over man. But I do know the results of each. And pleasing God is so much more rewarding. It is always a tough choice, but by the grace of God and his indwelling Spirit you can make the right one.
