Today is a quiet day at work except for the fact they are testing the fire alarm system. Even though I know the alarm will sound I'm never quite ready for it and I still jump every time it sounds. Life is kinda like that. I think I'm prepared for whatever may come when, wham, a surprise smacks me right in the face. It may be good, it may be bad. It may make me smile, it may make me mad. It's still a surprise.
I'm a person who loves fun and happy surprises. They make joy bubble up inside of me and it spills out in smiles and laughter. God's blessings are truly the best surprises. He gives them daily if I'm just aware of the small flashes of love in my day. For me it may be a beautiful butterfly, a bright red cardinal, the sweet chirping of a bird, or a child's contaigous laughter. I just have to open my eyes.
I also love to give enjoyable surprises to others. Cards, sincere compliments, smiles, hugs, and a friendly hello can make someone's day better. I've found that the Holy Spirit quite often nudges me to act. It's up to me if I do so or not. I've often regretted my non-action and been blessed by my action.
The best surprise is yet to come:
"Therefore you also must be ready,
for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."
Matthew 24:44 ESV
Like the fire alarms this morning I know Jesus is coming again. Like the fire alarms this morning I don't know when He will make His appearance. I must be ready by being about His kingdom work. I will still be surprised but I will be ready.
And he said to him,
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened,
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
