Fear

Fear.  An emotion we all experience.  Sometimes it can be a positive thing if it keeps us from doing something harmful or wrong.  However, often it prevents us from taking a risk that will enable us to grow as a child of God and as human beings.

Fear stops us from sharing our deepest thoughts and desires with others.  It keeps us from experiencing wonderful adventures that broaden our horizons.  It nips in the bud dreams given to us by God.  Fear robs us of enjoying the exciting life journey God has laid out for each of us.

How do I know so much about fear?  Because for years Satan used it to control and paralyze me.  Circumstances in my life led me to withdraw into myself so I wouldn't be hurt.  Satan took advantage of this and caused me to miss out on many wonderful opportunities.  I am grateful that even during this time God provided glimpses of what life without fear would be like by opening doors to amazing adventures and giving me the courage in those moments to walk through those doors.

Several years ago God led me to a wonderful Christian counselor.  As we talked she opened my eyes to the reality of fear in my life and the effect it was having on me.  She led me to Paul's words to Timothy.

"For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God,

which is in you through the laying on of my hands,

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

2 Timothy 1:6-7  ESV

Fear prevented me from fanning the spark of God's gifts into flames that burn bright for Him. Paul's words to Timothy helped free me from the crippling fear that kept me from living life and enjoying the journey.  Still today, 11 years later, when Satan tries to fan the flames of fear, I quote these words, "for God gave (me) a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."  God's word is powerful and "mightier than a two-edged sword".  (Hebrews 4:12).  He always calms my fears and gives me what I need to complete the task He lays before me.  He indeed fans the flames of the gifts He's given to me.

If fear has you paralyzed and is keeping you from enjoying your God-given life, ask Him to break the bonds.  When Satan tries to fetter you with the bond of fear speak God's word to him.  He cannot overcome what God has promised.  As Jesus said:

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.

In the world you will have tribulation.

But take heart; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33 ESV
