A week ago I donated blood at a local blood bank. So far I have given 1 gallon and have saved over 5 people, or so they tell me. I always joke with the staff that I have a list of people that I don’t want to receive my blood. A list that is made up of people I would rather see die in the ER than get my blood. I also say that there is always room on that list for more names. The techs always give me a crazy look and then I say “I'm just joking”. It made start thinking. What if God sent Jesus to die only for those who deserved it? Where then would I be? Who would be worthy of such a sacrifice? Did the thought ever cross Jesus’s mind? Tucked away in Romans we are once again reminded of God's mercy. When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:6-8 Paul was right in saying "we are utterly helpless". There was and is nothing we can do to be made right with God. It's only by His blood that we are saved. In the Old Testament the animal sacrifices just covered the sin. But when John saw Jesus he exclaimed to the people Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) Jesus didn't come just to cover, but to take away our sins.
Let's not just remember this on Good Friday. The only lamb that could make us right with God was the one that only He could provide. His precious son Jesus.
