When I believed and called upon the Lord and waited patiently for him, he heard me and lifted me up out of the horrible miry pit – the horrible pit 0f sin; the horrible pit of spiritual poverty; the horrible pit of fear and despair, and sickness of mind and soul; the horrible pit of temptation; the horrible pit of sorrow; the horrible pit of death. Consequently, I have a song of praise and thanksgiving in my mouth, and joy in my heart, for my feet are set upon the rock, and through Christ I can know the way and where I am going. I can agree with the psalmist who said: “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, nd established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40: 1, 2, 3.
