Discipleship: Being a Disciple, understanding discipleship, experiencing disciple ship
Being a Disciple: To better understand Discipleship we must first know what it means to be a Disciple. A disciple according to scripture is a follower, student, imitator and worker of our lord Christ Jesus. A Disciple is dedicated to learn being disciplined in the ways of their teacher. Who is obedient putting to practice the things there teacher taught. Luke 6:40 - The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one that is perfectly trained shall be as his teacher. The word disciple is translated from the Greek word (mathetes) which means a pupil or learner.
Understanding Discipleship: What is Discipleship? Discipleship is the learning process that we undergo as disciples after making a choice to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ .It's a student teacher relationship where we learn as students to walk in God’s love as imitators of Christ. That will go out into the world bearing much fruit prepared to do the work that we have been commissioned to do. While living lives that is pleasing to God. John 15:8 – “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”
Experiencing Discipleship: The follower- Luke 9:23 – “If anyone desires to come after me, let him take up his cross daily, and follow me.” To be a Disciple we must answer the call of Disciple ship. Choosing to leave behind the way of life we once lived surrendering ourselves completely being fully devoted to Christ. Luke 14:27 - And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.) Discipleship is learning a whole new way to live living life according to the teachings of Christ. We submit ourselves to him to partake of something new. To Change the way we think that our minds and hearts will be transformed. Taking part of his life that we may become more likes Him able to see and experience life through the eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The student- John 8:31 – 32 .Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed;32) And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. In this verse Jesus says that his disciples will continue in his word. To continue in his word we must do the things he told us to do. Knowing exactly what is expected of us as his Disciples what Jesus said and the things he told us to do. As students we must give ourselves to the study and meditation of scripture seeking diligently the truth holding tight to his teachings. Only then will we know the truth and the truth will make us free. Be committed!
The imitator - John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” As Disciples we must learn to imitate our teacher practicing each day to be Christ like. (Im·i·tate -to follow or endeavor to follow as a model or example: to imitate an author's style; to imitate an older brother.) Copying what we see and learn able to produce the same style of life in our own walk that Christ has demonstrated to us. To be Christ like is to be an expression of his love and a reflection of his character. Disciples, who will do the things he did, make the choices he made, think the way he thought and love the way he loved.
The worker- mat 9:37-38) Then saith he unto his disciples, the harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few 38) Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest. Mat 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The duty of a disciple is pretty clear we are to be Disciples who go out and make other disciples. As student we must learn and grow that we ourselves become teachers reflecting the life of Christ in our everyday walk as an example to others.
Discipleship is important in our Christian walk as we strive and grow to reach our full potentials in Christ. Discipleship teaches us to be Followers who are loyal and devoted. Students diligent working in their studies. Imitators who do what Jesus did reflecting the character of Christ while walking in his likeness. Workers who are prepared to go out into the world, share his word, serve his people and teach them the way of Discipleship.
God bless you all! David Kirby ( Disciple of Jesus)
