Default What Is An Abomination?

Abomination (Latin abominatus, past participle of abominari, "to deprecate as an ill omen") English term used to translate the Biblical term תֹּועֵבָה tōʻēḇā or to'ba (noun) or ta'ab (verb) in the Authorized King James Version, and sometimes in the NASB. Many modern versions of the Bible (including the NIV and NET) translate it detestable. .

The term in English signifies that which is exceptionally loathsome, hateful, wicked, or vile. In Biblical terms to'ba does not carry the same sense of exceptionalism as the English term. It simply signifies that which is forbidden or unclean according to the religion--RITUALLY UNCLEAN TO JUDAISM.

Like stones, the word was easy to throw around in ancient days--until Jesus came. If you were Egyptians, every Hebrew was an abomination because they were shepherds-- Every shepherd was "an abomination" unto the Egyptians (Genesis 46:34). This aversion to shepherds, such as the Hebrews, arose probably from the fact that Upper and Lower Egypt had formerly been held in oppressive subjection by the Hyksos (a tribe of nomad shepherds), who had only recently been expelled, and partly also perhaps from this other fact that the people of Egypt detested the nomadic habits of these wandering shepherds.
One the other hand, if you were a Hebrews the Egyptians were an abomination because they didn't want their animals burnt on an altar.(Actually, neither did God-Jeremiah) Recall, Pharaoh, in response to the fourth plague, refused the demand of Moses, but offered a compromise, granting to the Israelites permission to hold their festival and offer their sacrifices in Egypt. The Hebrews wouldn't accept the deal because Moses said they would have to sacrifice "the abomination of the Egyptians" (Exodus 8:26); i.e., the cow or ox, which all the Egyptians held as sacred and so regarded as sacrilegious to kill.
Thank God for Jesus. He never used the term and neither did He ever throw a stone. . In fact He turned Judaism on it's head by teaching not to worry about what you put in your mouth but worry about what comes out of it. Dont concern yourself with other people's abominations, you got your hands full with your own.

He said it but we still don't hear it.

I think abomonation would be any sin against the Lord. Although in the OT He was specific about certain abominations.

An abomination is anything that proclaims itself to be THE god or acts like it is THE god. It is also anything that has been dedicated to a false god.

It therefore is the entire world without god. Who have set themselves up as the gods of their own lives or who worship false gods (themselves, angels, animals or relics)

How do non Jews define abomination and where do we get our definition? I don't recall the word ever being used by Jesus. Did Paul use it outside Judaism?

Without regard to what was an abomination to any man, now or then, remember Antonio that God doesn't change:

"...For I am the LORD, I change not" Malachi 3:6

What was an abomination to Him always has been and always will be an abomination to Him!

And the words of Jesus are the words of the Father:

"...the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me,..." John 14:10

Antonio...you seem to take offense to anyone mentioning sin as
though they were being hateful or judgemental. That is a wrong
assumption. Don't assume to know what someone else 'feels"
about what God is saying. I suggest that rather than pointing
fingers at us you take it up with God since it's His word we stand
on.

...or rather...what "word" do you stand on is more the question?

BTW...there is alot more of God's word pertaining to life with a
relationship with Him & His very nature. There is so much to share
in that realm to be wasting time on how people percieve sin. Our
personal growth & relationship with God is more important than
any human fad of the day. Get it now?

Dear AMA-D-- I agree with what you say. Therefore, an abomination is today what it was in Leviticus, to'ba which simply signifies that which is forbidden or unclean according to the religion--RITUALLY UNCLEAN TO JUDAISM.
Not being a Jew, i can live with that.
Thank you

Dear Heneni-- you wrote
Quote:

I think you have reached a higher consciousness--the Levites were bean counters who required burnt offerings that God finally had to tell them He never wanted. You finally articulate what I think Jesus would say if asked the question and did say it in different ways to different issues, e.g., the Pharisees -white as sepulchers but filthy inside.
thank you
antonio

Well Antonio I see you have started a brand new thread in an attempt to justify your sinful way of life.

You ask what IS Abomination? But what are you REALLY asking Antonio?

Are you truly seeking a TRUE definition of the term abomination, OR are you seeking an answer to what IS an abomination in the sight of God?

You have already been instructed correctly with the use of adequate and highly accurate Old Testament evidence regarding the sin of homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22) (which IS still applicable) AND New Testament Biblical evidence regarding Homosexuality (1st Corinthians 6:9, Romans 1:18-26, Revelation 21:8) that the homosexual way of life IS an abomination in the sight of God and an unacceptable act of inhuman perversion.

Your desire to escape the just judgments of God and NOT be held accountable for your sins will NOT be granted to you, you WILL be held accountable and you will answer for your sins IF you choose NOT to repent.

God truly loves YOU Antonio BUT he despises your sin and he is certainly NOT pleased with your actions as a practicing homosexual.

Abomination (True and accurate Definition of): Foul, perverted, sickening, corrupt, disgusting, wicked, evil, unclean, vile, vulgar, polluted, repulsive, revolting, unnatural, unacceptable, repugnant, AND utterly depraved.
