I want to make a tribute to my step-father Robert Shook and honor his memory today on Father's day. My natural father died a few days after I graduated from highschool. My parents had been divorced 2 years already. My step-father's wife had died of a terminal illness and had his youngest of two graduate from highschool when my mom and him once again become reaquainted. In a small town you know everyone.
This wonderful man became once again a father to my younger brother and sister and hence began a process of a very loving relationship between himself my mother, his inherited five children and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren who followed. He died less than two years ago and his loss was felt and is yet felt throughout the family.
Though he came into my life late in life he never missed an important event which had to do with with myself or my children. His love and laughter are deeply missed on this day. I include a picture of the first event he took part in, in my life. His love was truly unconditional. I include a poem about a father not my own which depicts him.
What makes a dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,
He called it ... Dad
