This is a particularly interesting question in view of Jesus' statement that the least of those in the Kingdom of Heaven was greater than John (Mt 11:11), although Jesus also said no one greater than John had been born of a woman (I presume this excluded Jesus himself).
I've been unable to find an explanation of this that I can understand and would appreciate one.
The children of Bethlehem slaughtered by Herod in his effort to kill the infant Jesus are considered Saints but not necessarily martyrs.

John the Baptist was not a Christian, he was beheaded before Jesus was Crucified, therefore He did not gain Salvation the way we understand it to be, today.

So no, he wasn't the first Christian Martyr.
He was the last Jewish Prophet to be killed by the Jews.

Despite my deep concern about admitting that I agreeing with twinc two times could put me in serious trouble, he is right, and the sooner we begin to accept as Christians all who try to follow Christ (and to repent and seek forgiveness of their sins), the sooner the conditions of this world will again resume improving.
Seeking Truth is admirable; claims of perfection are the work of the devil.

If you are unable to comprehend the concept of Salvation, then no amount of explanation will change your mind.
To all of them, Jesus was Messiah, not Savior.

No St. John the Baptist is not the first Christian martyr, rather St. Stephen is considered the first Christian martyr traditionally
