Default Are People Becoming Dumber?

People may be getting dumber according to some scientists. From the Daily Mail:

Technology may be getting smarter, but humans are getting dumber, scientists have warned.

Evidence suggests that the IQs of people in the UK, Denmark and Australia have declined in the last decade.

Opinion is divided as to whether the trend is long-term, but some researchers believe that humans have already reached intellectual peak.

An IQ test used to determine whether Danish men are fit to serve in the military has revealed scores have fallen by 1.5 points since 1998.

And standard tests issued in the UK and Australia echo the results, according to journalist Bob Holmes, writing in New Scientist.

The most pessimistic explanation as to why humans seem to be becoming less intelligent is that we have effectively reached our intellectual peak.
Between the 1930s and 1980s, the average IQ score in the US rose by three points and in post-war Japan and Denmark, test scores also increased significantly - a trend known as the ‘Flynn effect’.

This increase in intelligence was due to improved nutrition and living conditions - as well as better education - says James Flynn of the University of Otago, after whom the effect is named.

. . .

Richard Lynn, a psychologist at the University of Ulster, calculated the decline in humans’ genetic potential.
He used data on average IQs around the world in 1950 and 2000 to discover that our collective intelligence has dropped by one IQ point.
Dr Lynn predicts that if this trend continues, we could lose another 1.3 IQ points by 2050.
Michael Woodley, of the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, claims people’s reactions are slower than in Victorian times, and has linked it to a decline in our genetic potential.

I would think our collective IQ might increase with web browsing potential and gadgetries we have since 2010 when this study compared. You can find answers to just about anything and the younger generation utilise these technologies.

It would depend on how these tests are conducted I suppose.

I'd say the opposite is true. The more gadgets we have the less we use our minds. Cashiers no longer even know how to count change unless their machine tells them. Try this sometime at a store. Give the cashier bills first and after he's typed that into the machine, then hand him some change. If the bill was $14.77, give him two pennies. Frequently you see a glazed expression come over the faces of cashiers.

I ask how intelligent was the Polish couple who plunged to the death recently in Portugal in front of their children trying to take a photo of themselves? Who with two brain cells to rub together would stand at the edge of a cliff and then move backwards towards the edge of the cliff? Wouldn't you also think the children would have said something? From the Daily Mail:

A couple 'taking a selfie' on the edge of a cliff died when they fell hundreds of feet while their young children watched.
The Polish couple died after falling from the rocky edge in Cabo da Raca, west Portugal.
Police say the pair, who are yet to be named, may have been trying to take a photo of themselves moments before they fell.

The couple's children, aged five and six, witnessed the accident and are now undergoing psychiatric care.
The parents apparently crossed a safety barrier in order to reach the cliff edge, but the police are still investigating their final moments.

An Italian girl also got killed trying to take a "selfie." Also from the Daily Mail:

An Italian teenager has died after falling 60 feet on to jagged rocks as she tried to take a ‘selfie’.
Sixteen-year-old Isabella Fracchiolla was trying to take a photograph of herself on the seafront during a school trip to the seaside town of Taranto, in south-eastern Italy.

What about people who obey their GPS while ignoring what they can see right in front of them? If the GPS tells them to drive into a river or the ocean, fine, they do it. Surely you heard about the tourists who did that in Australia. The natives are doing in here in America too.

I have two theories. It could be that the dumb people are having more children than the bright ones. It also could be pollution in the environment -- chemical or electromagnetic.

What seems certain however is that companies will keep mechanizing with more robots taking jobs from the unskilled workers. There will be fewer jobs for people who can get jobs now.

Too many people let all the devices of convenience do our thinking for us, and so we dont always exercise our minds as we used to. Imagination alone is something vastly thrown out by the majority and replaced by things like TV, computers, social media and the like.

Now for a tale of overwhelming stupidity from UPI:

A pageant mom in Florida is the subject of an upcoming episode of Untold Stories of the E.R. after forcing her daughter to ingest tapeworms in order to slim down for competition.

Seriously, how could anyone be this dumb?

After an apparent fight between the mother and daughter, it became clear the mother bought a pill of tapeworm eggs in Mexico and forced her daughter to take it to lose weight for an upcoming pagent.

"We were wondering how did she get those tapeworms, and then you saw the mom turn white," Cabral-Osorio said.
"The mom was apologizing to the girl. It's like 'I'm so sorry. You know, I did it just to make you a little skinnier. You needed some help before we went on to the pageant."

Taking selfies is a lot different than searching for answers in Wikipedia and learning how to do things which we have access to.
However in the cases you have presented I would suggest the IQ of the individuals was at a lower level before use of the gadgets.
How many of us can write programs and develop websites like they do in school nowadays.
Try and compete with teenagers in the online games they play. The reflexes are astounding.
That was part of the test in the link you gave.

Westerns have lost 14 IQ points on average since the Victorian age, according to a study published by the University of Amsterdam last year.
Jan te Nijenhuis thinks this could be because intelligent women tend to have less children than women who are not as clever, The Huffington Post reported.
The perceived link between IQ and fertility is a very contentious one.
Dr Nijenhuis studied the results of 14 intelligence studies conducted between 1884 and 2004 to come to his conclusion.
Each study measured peoples' reaction times - how long they took to press a button after being prompted.
It is claimed that reaction time mirrors mental processing speed - so it reflects intelligence.
They found that visual reaction times averaged 194 milliseconds in the late 19th Century, but in 2004, they had increased to 275 milliseconds.
This would suggest that people have become less intelligent, they said.

It is now 2014 and you should see the pushing of buttons and moving of cursors while typing conversations during the online games teenagers play.

They do seem more intelligent than the ones who chat on facebook or watch youtube or television.
From 2010 to 2014 things have changed quite rapidly for teenagers.

Perhaps tho the general population IQ would diminish. Teenagers socialising nowadays has shown to involve plenty of alcohol and that tends to kill brain cells.
Different cross sections would have some improving and others diminishing.

Wikipedia has its drawbacks as well. People can become experts at copy and paste and think they know something.

I've never heard of someone falling off a cliff having a photo taken before people got addicted to "selfies."

Ha! Reflexes! That's the ticket. Maybe we'll become a non-thinking society that operates on the Pavlovian stimulus-response mechanism. Wonderful!

It's been contentious for decades; and I suppose it will remain that way.

What I can tell you now about Central America is that the poorest people are often having the most babies and it's not uncommon for girls to get pregnant almost as soon as they hit puberty. It's also known that there is a link between poverty and IQ. Generally, the more intelligent someone is, the more likely he is to have a good job.

So I wonder what is going on there? There are rich areas where the upper classes are doing fine; but then there's the areas with grinding poverty and crime. Which is growing faster? Which type is motivated to flee their living conditions to come to the USA? Will they all be able to find jobs here? Doubtlessly some of the more gifted will; but what will happen to the others? Will they be become almost like a slave class of people, underpaid and taken advantage of? To a degree, illegal immigrants are already treated very poorly -- and it wouldn't surprise me if that trend worsened. What will happen when the food shortages hit hard? There has a been a drought in Central America.

What will happen in Venezuela? All that oil money, but the stores are largely empty. People get fingerprinted when shopping for food to make sure they don't buy more than the government allows. Surely stupidity is a factor here -- with the poor people supporting a corrupt regime that promised them everything but delivered more grinding poverty while the ruling elite got filthy rich.

Is that the wave of the future? That the only value of the teeming masses of the underemployed will be to elect corrupt politicians who make extravagant promises? It could be the future here in the USA.

What jobs will this qualify them for, do you think? Operating drones to kill people in other countries?

What you may be missing here is the trend to replace workers with robots. There will fewer jobs in the future for the less intelligent; yet here in America, we hear our leaders touting the advantages of education as if that will solve things.

At the moment, one of the countries in Europe with the fewest problems with unemployment is Turkey. They didn't get the loan they wanted, and they didn't get to join the EU. They couldn't mechanize their jobs the way they wanted in order to manufacture things in a internationally competitive marketplace. Their companies had to keep relying on people to do the jobs. Thus they have a higher percentage of their people working, earning money to spend; and their economy seems to be on a more stable footing to me than some EU countries.

President Obama seems aware of the problem but at a loss what could fix it. The answer, of course, would be to reduce the hours in the average work week so more average and below average people could be employed full time. It would be no problem since robots have increased productivity; but now, it's the employers who are the sole benefactors of increased productivity.

The argument against this is that it would make America less competitive internationally. The international corporations are running things, and they would move jobs if they had to pay workers the same amount of dollars for a shorter work week.

I don't know. We will have to wait for the survey in five or six years.

There is something in it for some to abide by it.
We shall see if my thoughts on that particular aspect are validated if and when the next survey comes out on that particular aspect.

Can they afford a holiday to Cabo da Raca, west Portugal and a digital camera or phone?
