It seems that her husband is experiencing depression, did she say how long he had been unemployed. Are they Christians?
Her comment regarding having to ride the subway seems a little petty, does she know that there are people who were upper middle class who are not living in the subway? in tents? and in their cars?
Maybe she just needs a "reality" check...I heard a saying once..."I complained because I had not shoes, until I saw a man that had not feet".
There is always someone who is doing worst than we are.
