Let me start with a little back ground information.
In the old testament the children of God decerned the will of God by casting the Urim and Thummim.
The Urim and Thummim were tools given by the Lord for soliciting and obtaining the will of Yahweh by His priests, and sometimes His kings.
You will find the very last time these were used was in the book of acts, chapter 1, when they were used to decern the replacement of Judas. Mathias was numbered with the other 11.
We all know Acts 2 is when cloven tounges of fire fell upon the crowd in the upper room and the lots were no longer needed.
In the book of 1Cor we find that the same spirit that fell in the upper room in the book of Acts gives out other gifts than just the cloven tounges of fire.
These gifts include:
The Revelation Gifts- Word of Wisdom
- Word of Knowledge
- Discerning of spirits
The Power Gifts- Gifts of healing
- Workers of miracles
- Gifts of faith
The Vocal (inspiration) Gifts- Divers kinds of tounges
- Interpretation of tounges
- Prophecy
According to the scriptures these gifts are for ALL spirit-filled believers.
Acts 2:17 / 1 Cor 12:1, 7 / Gal 3:28
You don't have to be baptized in the Holy Ghost either (Old testament examples prove this) (Matt 2:12, 13; 10:1,7,8)
The Bible Has 66 books. At the end of 65 of the books it says "Amen."
There is only one book (Acts) that dosen't say "Amen." Could that be because its the only book that hasn't been completed yet? Are we still living out the book of Acts? I think so. As one reads the book of Acts; one would see that the gifts of the Spirit were very functional. One would even find some prophets in this book.
There is a lot of dispute among the body of Christ as to whether all the Prophets are past away now. I can't say that I believe this. Let me also just say that there is a difference between walking in the Office of a Prophet and one that would prophesy. Just because one prophesys dosen't make that person a prophet.
All may prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
The book of 1 Thess 5:20; It states for us to despise not Prophecies.
Also to test all things...Hold fast to what is good.
It is important to know the voice of the Lord for yourself..Knowing your God will allow you to decern whether the prophecy be of Him or not.
The whole purpose of Prophecy is to encourage, edify, and exhort one another. God always deals in Love and gentleness, Should one ever hear a prochecy that would allow room for condemnation or tearing one down,. Its easy then to know Thats Not God!.
When one brings forth a word in the Name of the Lord. Don't be quick to judge. Hear the word ; try the word. See whether it be of God or not. Ask God to reveal to you; God always does.
