Default What Did Jesus Look Like?

I know the world has this image of Jesus as this blue eyed white man but really is this true??? Is this even scripture? If so, please post.

Actually, Christ was not attractive AT ALL.. He was deformed and barely passed for human. He was not this blue eyed handsome image that the world has associated Him with. Now, ultimately, does what He looked like matter? No, but truth is truth. Period. See these scriptures that describe how Jesus REALLY looked.

"Behold, My servant will prosper,
He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted.
14 Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
So His appearance was marred more than any man
And His form more than the sons of men.
15 Thus He will sprinkle many nations,
Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him;
For what had not been told them they will see,
And what they had not heard they will understand." Isaiah 52:13-15

"Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted." Isaiah 53:1-4

Jesus was severely disfigured, beyond human likeness. People hid their faces from Him and thought He was cursed by God simply by His looks.

Though there are no Scripture's to tell us what Jesus looked like, I believe that it is safe to assume that He wasn't a pretty, blue eyed, white man as portrayed in pictures today. Considering the area that He was born and raised in, He more than likely blended in as far as His appearance goes. Probably an dark olive complexion and dark hair and eyes, just as it is common for that area.

I personally often envision Him like the description from the Mount of transfiguration....

Matthew 17:2
He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.

I agree. It wouldnt make sense for Jesus to have been white considering what region He was born in. But yes, the scripture confirms that He was indeed disfigured. God Bless

I would disagree with your description here as Jesus being severely disfigured, etc. He was able to pass through the crowds of Jerusalem at it's peak without notice, the Romans needed someone to point him out to them which is contrary to being so noticeable. He was a laborer, so would have a muscular build, Revelations describes His hair as "wooly" so probably tight curls. He would have had the short cut beard common to the day for men, dark complexion, eyes and hair. Forensic scientists have actually done mock ups of what He would have looked like based on the average man of the day:

The earliest description I know of was written in an apocryphal letter @ 300 CE by the fictious Lentulus:

Lentulus, the Governor of the Jerusalemites to the Roman Senate and People, greetings. There has appeared in our times, and there still lives, a man of great power (virtue), called Jesus Christ. The people call him prophet of truth; his disciples, son of God. He raises the dead, and heals infirmities. He is a man of medium size (statura procerus, mediocris et spectabilis); he has a venerable aspect, and his beholders can both fear and love him. His hair is of the colour of the ripe hazel-nut, straight down to the ears, but below the ears wavy and curled, with a bluish and bright reflection, flowing over his shoulders. It is parted in two on the top of the head, after the pattern of theNazarenes . His brow is smooth and vary cheerful with a face without wrinkle or spot, embellished by a slightly reddish complexion. His nose and mouth are faultless. His beard is abundant, of the colour of his hair, not long, but divided at the chin. His aspect is simple and mature, his eyes are changeable and bright. He is terrible in his reprimands, sweet and amiable in his admonitions, cheerful without loss of gravity. He was never known to laugh, but often to weep. His stature is straight, his hands and arms beautiful to behold. His conversation is grave, infrequent, andmodest. He is the most beautiful among the children of men.

But tell me, why does it matter? Ugly, common, or beautiful, He will attract to Him only those who could see Him for what He is. His earthly appearance (IMO) would have no bearing on His mission.

Why would you say that you disagreed with ME when I posted SCRIPTURE that described Him???? I wasnt saying that He was disfigured, the Word of God said it. LOL. I dont understand people! They call themselves Christians yet they dont believe anything in the Bible. And the description of Him in Revelation is of Him in glorified state. Jesus was disfigured because the Bible CLEARLY describes Him to be so. There is NO doubt about that. Wow.

Also, even in your own post, it says that some of the people feared Him. Why?? And again, I said it ultimately does not matter what He looked like, I just wanted to share what someone showed me. The world does not READ or BELIEVE what is in the Bible and that is why so many are lost. God Bless

Artists - especially artists of centuries ago - painted things in a context of the culture they understood. Therefore it would be normal for Italian men like Michaelangelo or Raphael to paint Jesus the same color as everyone else they knew.

But artwork is not meant to be scientifically accurate. Artwork is an expression of the artist.

I have seen a black Jesus, Japanese Jesus, Indian Jesus, all sorts of Jesus. Check out this staute from Our Mother of Africa Catholic church:

We have all forms of art, as we are a global Church.

The Scripture that you quoted did not say that Jesus was disfigured in His normal appearance prior to the cross. Isa 52:13-15 is about the time period of the cross when He was beaten into a marred appearance. Then the other scripture that you gave ..Isa. 53:1-2 Described to us that Jesus was lowly and plain, there was no particular thing that made His appearance stand out, then verse 3 began talking about the time prior to the cross..when He was rejected by His people and the Pharisees. The Word of God never NEVER says what you claim it does.

This is a totally inmature, uncalled for statement!!! You said that He was a disfigured Man prior to the cross and then claim that the Bible says that...that just isn't true. The ONLY time that He was disfigured was when HE was beaten at the time of the cross. Then you claim that people are un-christian and don't believe the Bible. You just seem to have the facts wrong.

No there is no doubt that He became disfigured by His beatings at the cross, but prior to that Isaiah 53:1-2 says by appearance He blended in , there was nothing that made Him physically noticeable or special. And what's with the "WOW"...is it because you think that everyone but you has things wrong?

Who are you to say that? you shouldn't just be so quick to assume that you are right and every one else is wrong. Try using scripture that says that Jesus was a disfigured Man through out His life.......YOU will not find scripture that claims that.

I’m going to have to graciously disagree with your assertion that Jesus was marred and deformed as a man here on this earth as part of his normal, everyday appearance prior to the cross.

The Isaiah passage that you are referring to is pointing to the grotesque image of Jesus as he suffered horrible physical torment and disfigurements on the cross. From all of the accounts of Jesus’ torments in the gospels, it is quite safe to say that from the ripping out of his beard, to the beatings of the face, to the ripping off of his skin, to the crown of thorns, that he probably did not look human a the time of his death.

In fact, the disfigurement descriptions as part of Jesus’ torment goes all the way back to chapter 50 of Isaiah.

Quote:
Isaiah 50:5-8 (The Obedient Servant)
5 The Lord and King has unplugged my ears.
I've always obeyed him.
I haven't turned away from him.
6 I let my enemies beat me on my bare back.
I let them pull the hair out of my beard.
I didn't turn my face away
when they made fun of me and spit on me.

7 The Lord and King helps me.
He won't let me be dishonored.
So I've made up my mind to keep on serving him.
I know he won't let me be put to shame.
8 He is near. He will prove I haven't done anything wrong.
And the passage that you cited is also about the suffering of Jesus Christ in his final torment, not his daily appearance.

Quote:
Isaiah 52:13-15 (The Suffering and Glory of the Servant)
13 The Lord says, "My servant will act wisely and accomplish his task.
He will be highly honored. He will be greatly respected.
14 Many people were shocked when they saw him.
He was so scarred that he did not look like a man at all.
His body was so twisted that he did not look like a human being anymore.
15 But many nations will be surprised when they see what he has done.
Kings will be so amazed that they will not be able to say anything.
They will understand things they were never told about.
They will know the meaning of things they never heard about."
And Isaiah 53 continues this description of physical torment.

Quote:
Isaiah 53:4-5 (The Suffering Servant)
4 He suffered the things we should have suffered.
He took on himself the pain that should have been ours.
But we thought God was punishing him.
We thought God was wounding him and making him suffer.
5 But the servant was pierced because we had sinned.
He was crushed because we had done what was evil.
So…..what did He look like in the daily life before His bloody and vile death?

1. Jesus had a beard. (Isaiah 50:6.)
2. Jesus was not necessarily an attractive man. Isaiah said that Jesus would be a man of “no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2.) We shouldn’t be disappointed. The Bible says that beauty is fleeting. (Proverbs 31:30) Jesus, Himself, said that superficial attractiveness, even in one’s actions, is superficial. (Matthew 23:27)
3. People want their leaders to be handsome and attractive, but God doesn’t care about that. (2 Samuel 16:7)

Did Jesus have blue eyes with blonde or light brown hair? I seriously doubt it. He was a Jew who lived in the Middle East.

I agree faithIC, but truth2010 is very young (her bio says 23) and the young tend to jump ahead verbally sometimes without putting a lot of thoughts into what is said. Perhaps she will think on what you posted.

Who are you to say that? you shouldn't just be so quick to assume that you are right and every one else is wrong. Try using scripture that says that Jesus was a disfigured Man through out His life.......YOU will not find scripture that claims that.
"For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him
." Isaiah 53:2

Now look at this scripture carefully FAITHIC, does this sound like this was AFTER He was beaten? Instead, it says that He (Jesus)had no majesty or appearance that we should be attracted to Him. Period. This scripture also points out how He grew up, (like a tender shoot, like a root out of parched ground) and then later says that He was not attractive... which if YOU read in context, then this would mean He was indeed disfigured prior to His torture and crucifixtion.

You're right, He did blend in. God blended in with humans by taking the lowest form (a disfigured man) and had He not taken the low HUMBLE road and came in His TRUE form, then faith would not have been required. Jesus came looking like nothing special so that people would believe Him NOT by HIS looks but by His words and actions. So you got that part right dear, but you are still misinformed.

Also, instead of getting all emotional over my passionate responses, I suggest you use scriptures to support your claims. You will be held responsible for what you say is written in the Bible and if its not true, then the word of God says that what comes out of your mouth will either save you or condemn you to death. Iam not saying that I am right all the time, but if I am wrong, then reprove me with the Word of God, not your own words. Please study the word and rightly divide the scriptures, and with all thy getting, get an understanding. Please use scripture. If I am wrong, then SHOW me. Otherwise, I could care less with what you say or think. God bless

“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. 37 “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37
