It says in scripture, that "it" was desirable. But we were not meant to know it at least not at that time. It was basically grown up food, and we would be infants, living off the milk of God, until we were ready for that knowledge. Its obvious that most of us still are not ready for the grown up food of God.

They already knew that eating the forbidden fruit was bad because it will bring death. We learned what is right and wrong from our parents as we grow up. Our parents will tell us not to steal, not to lie, not to play with fire, etc. It was the same with Adam and Eve. God was their Father, and He told them not to eat the forbidden fruit. Eating it will bring death. So, they already knew and they knew the consequences.

Hello Selene. I'm not sure that they already knew what death was, so I don'tthink they knew what the consequences were, but I'll accept the explanation that "God said so" in this case.

What then, are your thoughts on God knowing in advance which choice they would make? I've always been told that God already knows the future.

The fact that God used the word "death" when instructing them not to eat the forbidden fruit is an indication that they knew what death is. God is all-knowing. He already knew the choices we would make before we make them. God already had a plan to save Adam and Eve and their descendants. And He knows how to use the choices we make to carry out His plan of salvation.

But they ate the fruit and did not die. Explain that please.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

CCC 399 Scripture portrays the tragic consequences of this first disobedience. Adam and Eve immediately lose the grace of original holiness.280 They become afraid of the God of whom they have conceived a distorted image - that of a God jealous of his prerogatives.281

CCC 400 The harmony in which they had found themselves, thanks to original justice, is now destroyed: the control of the soul's spiritual faculties over the body is shattered; the union of man and woman becomes subject to tensions, their relations henceforth marked by lust and domination.282 Harmony with creation is broken: visible creation has become alien and hostile to man.283 Because of man, creation is now subject "to its bondage to decay".284 Finally, the consequence explicitly foretold for this disobedience will come true: man will "return to the ground",285 for out of it he was taken. Death makes its entrance into human history.286

But they did die. They simply did not recognize it for what it was. Jesus confirms the condition of those walking around without the Life that he brought .

"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10

But then He also said with regard to those who were not following Him:

"...Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God." Luke 9:60
