We’ve all seen them. Perhaps seen them so much that they become unnoticeable after awhile. Yet, if not adhered to can cause incomprehensible damage to all our lives. What am I writing about? Warning signs. Signs that will show various things that we need to be aware of. Deer signs. Stop signs. Railroad crossing signs. Bear signs, depending on where you live. I once saw a beware of elephant sign while driving in East Africa. No matter what kind of sign it is, disobey it and receive the consequences.
When a new generation of Israelites were about to go into the land of Canaan and posses the land that their fathers should have been possessing, Moses addresses them with some very stern words. He says, “So be very careful to act exactly as GOD commands you. Don't veer off to the right or the left. Walk straight down the road GOD commands so that you'll have a good life and live a long time in the land that you're about to possess”. (Deuteronomy 5:32-33 The Message) The Apostle Paul, using similar words tells the church in Ephesus this, “So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times! Don't live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants”. (Ephesians 5:15-15 The Message)
Here are some warning signs that we might wish to guard against as we make our way further into this year. (A) Poison Sign- You’ve seen this sign around toxic waste dumps or where dangerous items are held that could do damage to a person. Perhaps we ought to hang this sign up and be aware of the following poisons which would like to infiltrate our inner life. Bitterness, strife, envy, jealousy, anger, malice, resentment, wrong communication. This is just not dirty talking this is also negative talking that can set us back from our progress of moving forward in the things of God. (B) Stop Sign- Stop pointing fingers. Stop critizing everything and everyone. Stop looking at the speck in your brother’s eye, but not considering the beam perhaps in your own eye. Stop using your tongue to condemn. Stop allowing the devil to tread all over your life. Stop cheating. Stop the affair. Stop the illicit relationship.
Do Not Enter Sign- Perhaps, if you are like me, this sign at times causes you to want to open the door and see what is on the other side. What am I being kept from? Danger? Fun? God holds up this sign periodically, not to keep me from excitement, or even enjoyment, but to protect my spirit man. For example, on the pathway of life I see this sign when I come across an angry man (Proverbs 22:24). I see this sign when I am about to enter into a relationship that violates the Word of God (Proverbs 22:26). This sign pops up when lack of self control begins to rule within me (Proverbs 25:28). This sign will shoot up when the battle gets rough, and the fire of the trial becomes severe that I want to turn aside and give up (Proverbs 24:10). This sign will show itself when like Adam I try to hide my sin from the eyes of God (Proverbs 28:13).
There is a final warning sign which you and I will encounter from time to time on our journey. It’s the sign that warns of a Curving Road. I live in an area of the country where there are mountains everywhere. Often my wife and I will get into our automobile and go driving through the beautiful scenery that God allows us to live among. As we travel, observing the beautiful sights an arrow pointing to the right or left will show up. If I choose to simply disobey those signs there are consequences which I will have to pay. Perhaps a dented fender on my automobile. Maybe something far worse. A raven so deep that destruction follows.
You and I are moving to a destination at this very moment. Never ever forget choices have consequences. You and I are on a journey. We are headed to rendezvous with God. Signs are posted along this road. Follow them, we arrive safely. Disobey, the price may be far more costly that most of us wish to pay. So, lift your head up today and start watching. Had I not observed the Beware of Elephant sign on the road I was driving on in East Africa, I most likely would not be at my computer typing these words which your eyes see right now. Seeing those creatures off in a distance made me more cautious in my driving. I say to all of us today, watch the posted signs today wherever you journey. Both natural and spiritual. They are there to warn us of approaching danger ahead!!!!!
