Biblical meditation is simply, “A God given process that produces a spiritual experience which causes a permanent change in my thinking”. God told the new leader of the people of Israel to spend day and night meditating. Here is how it was given to him. “This book of the law shall notdepart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success”(Joshua 1:8 KJV). The New Living Translation states, “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”
I have stated this before, but it bears repeating once again. When you and I were born again by the Spirit of God it was our spirit man which was made alive. It was the part of us that was dead. God touched it and we were instantly revived. My mind was never converted. I am well aware that there are those who would love to disagree with me, but the word of God proves me correct. My mind has to be renewed. The only way I can change my thought processes is by doing exactly what God instructed Joshua to do. And what Paul told the church at Rome to do as well, be “…transformed by the renewing of your mind…”(Romans 12:2 KJV). Does that mean then that I am not converted if I do not change my way of thinking following conversion? Not at all. It simply means that I will stay in the same condition of being defeated, discouraged, depressed, and despondent and will be on this never-ending merry-go-round until I do. Remember the Garden of Eden? Recall the meeting of the snake and Eve? The devil never attacked her spirit. He could not. But, he could plant a thought into her mind and when he did she began to dwell upon his suggestion and you and I and billions of other’s have lived with the consequences.
Think small, stay small. Think large, become large. Honestly that is true. Think defeat, become defeated. Think success and where your and my thought processes take us is where you and I will end up. Still have a hard time buying into what I am talking about? Listen to a wise man when he penned the words under the Spirit’s guidance. He wrote, “For as he thinketh in his heart,so is he…”(Proverbs 23:7 KJV) The word “thinketh” in that verse means, “to splitopen, reason out, calculate, reckon, estimate”. My mind has to be renewed. My thought processes have to change.
I grew up in and among Pentecostal people. I love them to this day. There is excitement, exuberance, and exhilaration among us when we gather. We are a Spirit-filled people. What we were not, for the vast majority, thinkers. That is not a put down, just an honest observation from having been around them for all these years. We shouted, spoke in tongues, and saw miracles, deliverances, healings, and the power of God come in awesome ways among us. He still does. I want Him to. Yet, among us Pentecostals, who lived by our emotions, I have seen Spirit-filled people depressed, oppressed, and bound. Why is that? Because we were never taught the power of Biblical meditation which would cause our minds to overcome whatever it was that tried to attack us. But, in this generation I see a change occurring. I see not only those of us who are Spirit-filled to continue in the fire of God, but I also see an army of people who have allowed the word of God to get down into their soul, whose minds are being renewed on a daily basis, that will become a dangerous threat to the devil’s kingdom. Small minded thinking is ending. Radical thinking is moving to the forefront. Negative thoughts are being overcome. That which is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report and virtue are taking center stage because we as the people of God are beginning to think on things that are radically changing us from the inside out.
Are you tired of being defeated? Have you had enough of the devil keeping his foot on your neck? Have you stomached enough of lack? We are what we think about. Far too long I was a defeated individual in my own life. The enemy had me convinced that I would stay in the same cycle of defeat. I tried fasting. I prayed hard. I have had hands laid on me. All three are important in the life of a believer. What I really needed to do was to change my thought processes. When I did, my life turned around. I did not try the world’s form of meditation. I did not sit in a corner with my legs folded and chant slogans. I began to think on God’s word. It took awhile. I had been in bondage far too long. The road out was long. At times I wanted to quit. But, I knew if I did I would go back to the same old patterns. That I cannot afford to do. Now the choice is ours. Change your thinking, change your life. It honestly is that simple. But, change it with the word of God!!!
