While reading Jeremiah 2 I saw how America was like Israel.
America was called by GOD to be a nation when it was not a nation. It was not a nation but a loose gathering of believers and non-believers who all wanted freedom. The non-believers wanted freedom from oppressive government regulations and the believers wanted freedom to worship GOD as they believed He wanted them to.
Israel did not follow GOD’s instructions on taking the land of promise and the founders of America wanted freedom so bad that they allowed freedom of anything and everything.
As in Israel this resulted in the land being filled with sin and rebellion to GOD. As Israel could not cleanse the land neither can the Church cleanse America. Only GOD can convert or remove those opposed to Him.
The Church like Israel is to present and represent GOD’s love and righteousness in humility with prayer and fasting. To allow Holy Spirit to restore America to it’s GOD given purpose of being light and salt to the world.
America was not called by GOD to be a super power, economically, militarily, or politically. America was called to be a beacon of light in a world of darkness, to shine GOD’s love on the lost and rejected and His righteousness and salvation on sin. America was called to bring flavor to religious mumbo jumbo and living water to a parched world.
If we truly want America to have revival it must first repent. If we truly want America to repent the Church must first repent.
The Church is supposed to be the spiritual and moral guide for America. If the Church is full of sin and immorality how can it guide America out of its sin and immorality?
I hear people say things like, “If the Church would rise up and vote together we would change America.” This is not a true statement because the Church is not united. The Church cannot and therefore will not rise up as one because there is too much sin and immorality in her. Therefore America cannot be changed by the Church. This is good news for the Church and America.
I’ve heard it said that, “During severe persecution the Church thrives.” This is true, therefore the continued spiritual and moral decline of America will lead to true persecution of the Church in America. This will lead to the separation of the sheep and the goats or, the true followers of Christ from the name only followers of Christ. This will cause the true followers of Christ to grow in faith, hope and love until there is revival in the Church which will lead to revival in America.
If that is not what we, the Church want then we must stop quoting 2 Chronicles 7:14 and begin believing 2 Chronicles 7:13-15, “If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.”
If we believe that GOD’s judgment is on America then we the Church (His people) must humble ourselves, pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways, this is what repent means. Then He will hear our prayer forgive our sin and heal America. Because, we will only get His attention in a positive way if we are humble and seek Him and His Kingdom first.
Isaiah 58 is about fasting, verses 1-5 are critical of the heart condition of those fasting, even though they seem zealous to serve GOD. Verses 6-14 tell of the heart condition and type of fasting that pleases GOD and will receive His blessings. Fasting is not to be just denying oneself of food, but of pleasure, leisure, work, personal desire, entertainment, etc. so that you can minister to others.
“Give up yourself for others.” “Lay down you life for the brothers.” “Love one another as I have loved you.” “Be kind, tender hearted forgiving one another as I have forgiven you.” “I have become all things to all men that by all means I might win a few to Christ.” “Do to others what you want done to you.” These are few common (paraphrased) quotes of scripture that remind us that we are not Christians for our own sake. We are saved and live for Jesus so that we receive all of the eternal benefits of salvation. But, we are not saved to hang on until the end and living for Jesus is more than earning points for future rewards it is about expanding His Kingdom and destroying the kingdom of darkness.
My concept of Fasting Ministry is that we give of our most important commodity, time. We still need to seek GOD in prayer and fasting in the traditional way and we need to remember Jesus’ admonitions about giving, praying, fasting, and rewards (Matthew 6:1-21), we are to do them before GOD, not to be seen of men. It is impossible to do everything in secret but it is possible to not go about bragging and proclaiming.
Do you watch sporting events regularly? Then give them up once in awhile to help someone, mow a lawn, clean a gutter, repair leaking plumbing for someone that cannot do it themselves.
Do you go to the movies regularly? Then baby sit so someone can go shopping or go to the movies, take their car to the garage.
Do you enjoy sitting around reading or working puzzles, or playing video games? Then lay them aside to give time to your church to help with their projects or ministries.
Do you regularly sell vacation time back to your employer? Then take vacation time and go on a short mission trip to support missionaries, or volunteer at the local homeless shelter, food bank, or feeding ministry for a week.
We all have time and things that we can do to bless others rather than ourselves. Isn’t that what the LORD is saying in Isaiah 58:6-7, 9b-10a, & 13, “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Isit not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, that you cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, if you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words.” The rewards of this type of fast are in verses 8-9a, 10b-12, & 14.
