I have learned the answer to that is "no". We have to make sure our desire is to be like Christ first. Eternal life without Christ will not work.
In Genesis 3:22 (after Adam and Eve sinned) And the Lord God said, " the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and live forever.
Comment : At this stage man has the sin nature or fallen nature so to have eternal life at this time will carry over that nature to eternity.
Man has to repent first and become born again and then live forever.
Next question : How can we be Christ like ? This can be done by praying, reading the Bible, learning from the life of Jesus. By following the commands of Jesus. By being discipled by mature believers.
David a man of God's own heart had one slip and he got into a sinful relationship with Bathsheba. II Samuel 11:1-26. What lesson or lessons can we learn from David.
Here is the starting situation, according to II Samuel 11:1 In the spring at the time when kings go to war. King David remained in Jerusalem and that is when one evening he saw Bathsheba bathing. He also found out she is married but yet he sent for her.
What can Christians learn from David's example ? Lesson one avoid being in a wrong place a place where we are not supposed to be. Stop at the next stop sign or "do not enter sign".
An example of this is in the internet, one could be casually surfing or purposely seeking some unwholesome site when one ignores the warning signs and kept on going.
Learn from Joseph one of the sons of Jacob who when being tempted by Potiphar's wife that Joseph decided to run away although he was still falsely accused and got sent to jail but God knows he is innocent..
Temptation could be anything that lead to a sinful or damaging situation. Stop as soon as you can and run away from it.
The answer is for you and your friend to be committed to or with Jesus Christ. According to the Bible nothing can separate you or anyone with the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Jesus Christ is and will be the common ground or denominator..
Does this makes sense ? Calculate or imagine it in your mind. Let's say friends are separated by say death. Since Jesus Christ gives eternal life both you and your friend will have eternal life someday. In eternity you and your friend will see each other with Jesus, so it will last, do you agree ?
Our false identity come from Satan. This happened when through Adam we inherited sin nature. But our true identity occurs when we repent of our sins and accept, believe, trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
Through Adam we inherited death and through Jesus we inherited life.
How about identity thief ? This occurs when we allow deception to happen to us. When we do not fully trust in Jesus. When we are not serious with our Christian life.
Let us examine ourselves if we truly believe in Jesus. Better still to let God examine us and reveal to us our sins, enemy strongholds, and for Him to cleanse us.
Ephesians 2:8,9 are verses often used to discuss about salvation.
Let us quote them: For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Comment: Discussions on these verses often revolve around grace, faith, works, gift of God, even supplemented by James with his " faith without works is dead". But I do not recall " not of yourselves" given emphasis by some or others.
Could " not of yourselves " mean anything ?
Please ponder this, and hopefully something will come out.
