The Armor of God and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ
I have been studying the armor of God as written in Ephesians 6:10-18 on and off for a long time and last night was one of those times to continue and reflect on it. As I listen to fellow Christians share about the armor of God I was also thinking and asking in my thoughts about it. By the way Paul mentioned the following armor, the helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals (shoes) of peace, the belt of truth, the sword of the Spirit.
As our group and other groups discuss about these armor, I asked myself, who will remind me of these armor wearer or soldier. I thought about Paul and other Biblical characters. And at this moment that I thought of our Lord Jesus Christ. But you may say Jesus was never a soldier when He was in human form , He was a carpenter.
To make a long story short, let us look at what happened during the crucifixion. It looks like everything that happened was designed to prevent Jesus from wearing the armor of God. Instead of helmet , they gave Him a crown of thorn, instead of shield and sword , they nailed His hands. Instead of breastplate , they gave Him lashes. Instead of belt of truth, they stripped Him. Instead of shoes, they nailed His feet. But as I hope we will see is Jesus need not wear the armor because He is our armor.
In summary this looks like a picture of defeat but in reality through the cross our Lord Jesus conquered the enemy (satan), our sins, paid for penalty of our sin which is death. At the cross which I believe is Jesus' greatest battleHe won the battle for us. In this life , the best armor we can wear is Jesus who is our salvation, our shield , our righteousness, our faith, our sword, our truth and peace.
As the Scriptures says let us look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. And most of all He is also our armor, the armor of God.He is not only the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world but He is also the Lion of the tribe of Judah.
First, let me make it clear that this is not to glorify satan but to expose his many devices as I learned from the Bible and from observation. Our Lord Jesus says the enemy came to kill, steal and destroy while He (Jesus) came that we may have life and have it more abundantly.
As I observed some people does not even believe satan exist. I believe among satan's priority is to keep people from being saved. The Bible says satan deceives the whole earth. But how you may ask did he does this? First it happened when he deceived Adam and Eve. That allowed the sin nature to come to mankind. Only through Jesus Christ can we overcome this sin nature.
In this modern time, as I observed satan is not against truth as long as we only get half truths or truths coupled with lies. He will prevent people from reading the Bible and if he can not prevent that he will lead people to misinterpret some passages of the Bible with the end result of people missing the salvation that God has prepared for His people.
Satan works through our flesh ( please see my other blog "the flesh and Spirit").
How do we guard against satan ? First by accepting that we have sinned, repent of them, and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Then pray for a church that will make you grow in grace and truth. How do we know grace and truth is being taught ? The Bible which contains the word of God and God's dealing with man provide as our guide and with the help of the Holy Spirit who will lead us into all truth.
Our main defense against satan is the sword of the Spirit or the Word of God or the Holy Bible.
I am writing this blog on the above subject based on what I read in the Bible and my experience in applying it on my life. But first what do we mean by flesh and Spirit.
The flesh to my understanding is what our physical senses tells what is right and wrong. The Spirit is from the Holy Spirit or God. The Bible says the Holy Spirit is given to those who realize they are sinners, repent of the sins they committed , and accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
As i live my Christian life i noticed that the flesh is tricky. Sometimes it will tell me a thing or something is good when it is not. Like when I found something wrong in others I rejoice but is it right ? I believe it is the flesh telling me to be proud. The flesh tries to glorify self.Meanwhile when others found something wrong in me I sense myself getting upset. The flesh tends to be self righteous. So the Spirit will tell me to respond in love and understanding to those who make mistake and to own up to my mistakes or sins.
Sometimes the flesh will tell us there is nothing wrong with what we believe and it is a waste of time to verify or check what we believe.
The flesh will try or tries to justify what we are doing wrong.
On other times the flesh will condemn ourselves, like when we are unable to overcome weaknessesin our life. But the Spirit role is to pick us up and give us a fresh start.
If you are trying to please God and still find yourself miserable, the answer could be we fail to distinguish the difference between flesh and Spirit. While if you found yourself enjoying sin then flesh is still controls you. We need to disarm the flesh.
We need to remember that our flesh pulls us away from truth.
I will end here for now and meditate some more on this battle between flesh and Spirit.
